mexico and new mexico are close enough. we're right next to mexico, and sometimes, new mexico is very mexico-like

It doesn't necessarily work that way. For example, England and New England are nowhere near each other, and New England's soccer team sucks.

i'm not saying that's how it always work, i'm just saying that in this instance, that's exactly how it works. new mexico is populated with enough mexicans that we are similar to mexico in a lot of ways. i guarantee that more than 70% of the people in new mexico know spanish. it's practically a job requirement
