Actually, it was the english the screwed english up. American english is much much closer to what everyone in the british empire spoke way back when. Yes, they both went in different directions but it was the british that diverged more.

I believe what Gwee talked about that I responded to had the context of the more recent divergences. More accurately, it's probably the fact that there had to be American English at all. Though, personally, despite consciously choosing British over American English, I probably think closer to American English―at least as far as internal monologue goes.

I live in a country where English in formal education leans more to being American, but there's no fixed standardisation (and it's pretty crappy, to be frank), so mix-ups *cough*likecanada*cough* are quite common. "She doesn't realize that he harbours romantic feelings for her." Suffice to say that my choice is a conscious one, as formal education doesn't sufficiently cover even the basics; however, it's not without outside influence.

Since neither formal education nor daily life provides such influence, the media I consume fills in the vacuum. And when it comes to media consumption, I tend to get American stuff much more than British. Also, as nowadays I don't watch movies or anime, I turn to gaming for my primary source of digital entertainment. Getting NA games is much easier than EU ones. Not that I care either way, especially if they only differ in spelling.

To add, personally, I also prefer some elements of American English over British. For example, "you use quotation marks like this in American English," whereas "you use them like this in British English". In this case, American English feels easier and more consistent to me. Also, for some expressions like "cutting off" vs. "cutting up" in the sense of traffic, I will always inevitably consider one less apt than the other. On the other hand, for the vast majority of spelling differences, I prefer British.

So, not being a native speaker or living in a country strongly affected by either culture, I have the liberty to choose what I want. And I do acknowledge that, at least to me, each has things that I consider "better" or "worse". But, ultimately, I choose to go with British English. Because.

I don't know. I've only lived through two, and I was still pretty innocent during the transition to the new millennium to notice. :P
