Another note: In British English, the roles of the quotation marks are reversed; so double quotation for a quote within a quote, and single quotation for the initial quote. Depending on which you use, you should stick to it when writing (of course).

To be honest, the whole language itself is a pain. This problem would never had arisen if American English did not exist. Then again, you have new words being added every now and then. And slang. The latter really isn't a problem for me but, people have their own preferences, whether if I like it or not. It's just that if they're going to write the way they are, at least write in a way where the reader doesn't feel like he is trying to decode something.

I suppose those are the problems that come from being the language of the world. Inevitably, it's going to be affected by local culture (outside of the UK).

Since the whole point of language is communication, it would be meaningless if no one understood what was being written. However, interpretations of readings from different parts of the world may differ.

I only recently learnt that the term "handphone" was something Southeast Asian.

And I've been using it like it's everyday English for years.

Hahaha~ You got me with this one. All the Asian adults I know (parents and uncles, and aunts) use this term all the time when referring to a mobile phone because it's the literal translation when you translate it from Chinese to English.
