Yes the whole Fate series actually started as a VN. Then there came the manga and anime. Actually, almost all of Type-Moon's creations started as VNs.

I'm kinda excited about Fate/Apocrypha and Tsukihime 2/Satsujinki if ever those are really going to be pursued. ^^

Too bad though, I think they should also have pursued Fate/Prototype even if they just put it in an alternate dimension or in a different timeline.

Err.... Actually Type-Moon is the company behind the whole Fate Series, Tsukihime, Kara No Kyoukai, Melty Blood and Carnival Phantasm. I'm an avid fan of all their works so I should know XD
