Hmm... Well, I think that the best format for movies is the trilogy format: a franchise shouldn't be more than 3 movies, because otherwise suffers the franchise itself - so is it e.g. like with Star Wars or Harry Potter: they're the victim of their own success, what this even hardcore fans of the franchise feel...

Yes, designed trilogies can be good. To be fair though, when the studio says, "We'll give you 100 million to do another film," artistic considerations are often put in the background. ;)
