Oh well, still won more than I lost.

Oh yes, it's one of the things that keep the game fresh.

Every few months, a new set is introduced. Every year, old sets are rotated out of the standard format. The standard format uses the latest cards.

This way, players must regularly change their decks to reflect new cards and mechanics, and take out older cards. They can't just make a deck and sit on their laurels.

Deck building skills are essential to successful Magic players.

And don't worry about the older cards, there are deck formats that allow their use.
