I have a debate on gun policy to prepare for and I have no idea how to argue that civilians should be allowed to carry firearms.

Anyone here can give insights of one who has lived in the other side of the world?

Obviously, it would be a wonderful world if there was no violence, and no need for weapons. Sadly, it does tend to be a violent world. Human history is a violent story.

Without arguing for or against the existence of guns, they exist, and must be considered.

It is a fact that violent and criminal people will always find weapons, without regard to law or social mores. Only socially conscious and decent people obey the law.

Washington DC has some of the strictest gun control laws in the US, but is still a leader in gun violence.

We are inundated with gun violence stories in the US. Violent criminals will always find access to weapons, regardless of the circumstances, and will do violence without regard to others.

Socially conscious people at least have a fighting chance when facing an armed criminal, if they are also armed.

The news also has stories of armed civilians stopping violent criminals from extended killing sprees.

There will probably always be violence. At least allowing civilians to be armed gives the chance of a more level playing field when facing violent criminals.
