Well the most important thing I can think of for writing a story/paper is to have a clear ending in mind, and have all the parts working towards that ending.

Oh my god. Reading one of the most brilliant and satisfying chapters I've seen yet in a fanfic.
They do this awesome swap of perspective where you think it is 3rd person narrator, but it is actually a 1st person narrator stalking their target.

It was really great because it was set up so naturally that it caught me completely off guard. Just like a normal interlude chapter following another character. Then suddenly it is one of the main characters all along. :D
