Well if you do do it, at least use a paper stump instead of your fingers. The basic idea is you put on layers of soft pencil/charcoal (b), and then use your smudging tool to drag bits of the pencil towards lighter areas, or blur areas a bit.

Had to copy a photo for a class @_@ Basically cover the page in charcoal and erase away the unnecessary stuff =w= Was such a waste of charcoal (imo) xD But yeah using something like paper would probably make the smudging easier? And if you smudge a part then it might look odd not to do so to other parts so it turns out to be more work than just drawing at times =w=
