I spent maybe 2 hours trying to cleverly solve a problem (and failing miserably) that the very last line of the assignment basically said not to bother with (just gave a workaround based on assumptions you can make).

No because this is programming and it means that my program wouldn't work. I could potentially leave it there and comment it out, (tell the program to ignore it when it compiles/runs), but I would probably lose marks for making it messy. :P

Well I learned that C doesn't really like you to fool around with matrix sizes too much. You need to just determine some number while writing the program and feed it that as a constant.
