i would probably just need a recording device.when plugged in to my computer, the sound can go through the computer. all i'd need is a program that records audio

Hmm... But it'd would more benefit, if it with the PC or laptop connected is. Because you could then immediately the recorded sample check and may even a bit edit on that. And such softwares should be in internet like sand at beach give, though some programs could be really expensive...
