Yeah, from Rome, to the Swedish Empire, to Napoleon, to Germany, invading Russia in Winter has always been a bad idea.

The only successful Winter campaign against Russia, that I know of, was the Mongol invasion in the 1200's. Although the Mongols were successful, the invasion ended with the death of their Khan.

Since the Mongols came from even worse weather, the Russian Winter must have seemed like a Spring day. ;)

Although I never made it to Mongolia, I've taken the Trans Siberian railway from Moscow to Beijing (Manchurian route). There is so many desolated small run down towns, nothing to really offer, plus really awful winters. Even the five days I spent in Moscow I didn't have hot water for my shower until two hours before I left. So honestly, I would hate to spend winters which is the reason why they resort to drinking.
