Do all the side quests!
Basically my problem is they asked me to go straight to the other side of the map, and that meant that I encountered a few other towns, and about ten thousand dungeons on the way there.

did you have to fight dragons too? you don't encounter wild dragons until after a certain part of the story

The countryside is strewn with the bodies of dragons. I think you can probably fight them after the first one?
 
131789 Well I fought tons before getting the horn, I know that much. I don't think I ever did get the horn...
