i actually have caught. a lot of which happened before 3rd gym. at least 43 were before 3rd gym as a fact

I just catch it and check the stats while in battle with the boss. If it's high enough I go and check the nature otherwise I'll reset. But it's still very long proces =/

See whether if you defeat the pokemon the first time and then throw a Pokeball the second time you fight him and see if it'll be caught automatically.
