I guess you'll be able to use PC for calculation if you study a little. They say that C++ is very difficult, but it's not so difficult if you don't care about tyding of code.
Or, if you calculate for some physical problems, I recommend to use mathematica.

That's common in university, i think. Usually they are involved in some kind of research .....

something like that but university support this and is even required in some cases that you are evolved in other projects. (Think of it like that teachers always build their knowledge. ) Of course there is only a few of them and this applies to the top universities in the country - world.

Some of them also force teachers to do this (for example Berkeley ) that they don't pay vacations so that teachers won't be lazy.....
