Direct download would be something like downloading through file factory, uploaded, or rapidgator. A service that gives you a direct line to a server that has the file, and transfers it to you.
Utorrent connects you to a good deal of people who may have all or just a part of the file, and get them all to transfer parts of the file to you (until you have the whole file). This is called peer to peer (p2p) downloading.

Failed? Are you using a decent download manager? Many services allow you to resume these days.
