I think using "similar" when searching for images is helpful. You could try searching by dominant color as well.

We don't; it could bring unwanted consequences. The elements you can have in your signature are pretty much the same as what you can have in a post (plus the limitations, like 500x300 max for images).

I make mine with basic photoshop skills.
I have Photoshop CS 5 Extended. I learned a lot through youtube tutorials.
And just toying around with photoshop helps too, so you learn what most of the buttons do.

Another helpful thing is a Render. These are great if you want to make a signature from complete scratch.
I think renders are 'images without background' Not really sure if that's the way to put it but I hope you understand.
For example, JUST the anime character.
I noticed I'm a complete noob explaning this but If you have any questions, drop me a visitor message and I'll gladly help ^^
