Sadly, that is the case. In the "old days", graphics were pretty lacking, so they substituted that with story. Game-makers are forgetting what made those older games classics in the first place.

The old studio still works, but since I installed the new maps, the skin has become a little darker and the old grainy, dark skin shine/specular issues have returned. Not sure what to do about that. (That issue only shows up when I load a map)

Himekishi Olivia already has been posted uncensored by Jan55 in October and November 2016 (Trimax), Mesmerized Slave is Gakuen Saimin Reido and has leaked uncensored already with all 3 episodes in may 2015 via website rips in AR 860x480 px. So everything already is available in open web...

Yeah, the whole body completely disappears in the character creator. Nope, the files were not misplaced, just double-checked. I put all the abdata\chara files (15) in the appropriate place, and yes, the list file is where it needs to be, as well. I only installed those two particular things.
Even if I have to install disk 2, that still wouldn't explain how they worked fine for you without the disk 2 files and not for me.
It's a completely different mesh, and not something that came with HS or SBPR.
