Oki, so it was fine, but still super shoddy, makes me wonder a bit.
You need a mod to improve resolution as well, ugh. Are you really talking about just being able to use native res here ?

I think I'm likely to just play the "sequel". Won't take time for the prequel anyway it seems. And the story doesn't really seem to mind from my online search.

By super shoddy I just mean it was a port of the most base kind. They put the game on the PC, and that is about it. The team hadn't ever done a port before, so they just... opted to not do things. So keyboard and mouse controls are awful, and as I said if you want high res graphics you need the DSfix mod (which is really easy to install: you just drag some files into the DS game folder) which I highly recommend if you get it. Makes the game look a LOT better. Otherwise you will be playing at console resolution (720p). Because of aforementioned bad port, you can't really raise the framerate over 30fps without kind of breaking the game though, so you'll want to just play at console 30fps. Other mods to consider are just a lot of neat texture mods (if you use DSfix, then there is a mod that raises text resolution that you'll definitely want). There is also a mod someone made if you specifically want to co op/duel with your friends (so if you got the game and this mod, I could probably play with you :D).

You don't need to play Dark Souls before playing Dark Souls 2, but as a personal preference, I would say this:
Demon's Souls = the coolest, and most well put together in the series plot and lore wise. Best atmosphere I've ever experienced in a game.
Dark Souls = the most fun, and most replayable in the series (I've probably logged well over 1k hours)
Dark Souls 2 = the longest (I have a hard time thinking of what it does best so far, partially because I am still so disappointed with it :/)
