Does it bother you that most VNs only give you two options when making choices?

Three options seem just right.I really like the choice mechanics in the Harukanaru Toki no Naka de series. Most options merely add interactive responses and develop the protagonist's personality; only a handful of pivotal choices determine which character route you unlock. There are alternative methods to boost affection points, such as participating in battles. Many fully text-based visual novels contain choices that look nearly identical at first glance, yet they can drastically alter whether you receive a good or bad ending—Amnesia is one such example.

It bothers me a little because I feel it limits the player's freedom. Because sometimes neither option represents what I'd like to say. I would like there to be more options to better develop the protagonist's personality and for the decisions to be more interesting and varied.🎀

Not at all, since a lot of the time many choices just give you two new lines of dialogue and then lead to the exact same thing.
I'd rather have less choices that are more meaningful.

Yes, it really bothers me. I always wish we had more options to choose from and more meaningful interactions between the MC and the cast. Having variety in the story and branching paths makes the game so much better and increases replayability.

I've thought about this sometimes. I wish there were three or even four options.
Update: If you want to, check out post #19 for more details on what I mean.
Agreed, normally the two options don't really leave enough room for exploration if that makes sense? It kind of feels like those quotev quizzes 'which hogwarts house are you in?' You already know what the ending each choice will give you, but it doesn't feel satisfying. Especially if the two choices are two personalities sets for the MC amd neither of them are appealing to you😪 sometimes I don't mind tbh, but there are games where I'm like 'this plot is so fun, I wish we got more options amd endings'

having too many choices can sometimes make a VN feel unnecessarily complicated. I'd rather have a few well-written choices than dozens that don't actually affect anything

It honestly doesn't matter the number of choices for me. Rather, I'm baffled how common it for choices to not matter and end up with the same thing or little variation from the choice besides the route ending. More unique options to drastically change the game's story and interactions would be more interesting to me, not the quantity.

not really! i don't mind having only two choices as long as they actually matter. what annoys me is when the choices barely change anything or just lead to the exact same dialogue and events lol

I don't mind it at all.
If it's necessary for the story, I think it's fine to include it.

Honestly what bothers me a lot more is just the overall lack of the effect of choices. Choices don't really matter much outside of getting you bad endings that cut your gameplay short or an alternate ending (but the majority of the route still plays out the same lol)

Not really. It's impossible to me to play without a guide, I use my time wisely and I don't like get stuck because I obtain the incorrect answer. But sometimes, I just want to enjoy the story and not make many choices, I think, it's depends of my mood.

not at all! if anything, im more than satisfied with kinetic vns

I didn't even know stories like that existed in vns lol, I wonder if there are otomes like that 👀

I don't really mind how many choices there are tbh.
What I find irritating is when the two options are something stupid like "Yes" and "Yeah", and I don't feel like I'm making much difference in the story.
I know localisation plays a big part in this (it's harder to convey formality in English), but even in the original language that being the only two choices is pretty boring.

It just feels like, for a text adventure game, it's kind of a shame to have it set up this way...
I really love those clever choices that the designers carefully thought through.
Being able to see completely different reactions / sides of the characters through the various choices is a really enjoyable part of the experience.

It's just right for someone like me who suffers from decision‑making paralysis. There are still times when I don't want to pick either option, but the more choices there are, the longer I will definitely agonize over them.

Yeah but as long as neither option looks dumb, I'm fine with it. I just wish there were more options tbh.

It kind of bothers me tbh, although I don't think about it too much. I just sometimes wish there'd be more options and branching scenarios — give more autonomy to the player and stuff. It's why I really enjoy interactive fiction bc you get to make a lot of choices (even outlandish choices)

I don't play otomes and VNs in general for choices, so not really, besides, VNs tend to be more lineal and sometimes I feel that choices have no real impact. Which makes sense, you would need many more resources to pull that and I prefer that the budget goes to create a good story with good art.

If I want my actions to affect meaningfully, then i play Interactive Fiction.

I think more choices would be nice cuz it gives you more freedom to choose how your character behaves. Sadly, most choices wouldn't change the flow of the story and would need more budget to actually make different branches but maybe one day VNs would become more immersive.

Depends on the game and if the choices lead to something engaging.

While more than two choices and all of them mattering would be nice, most VNs aren't like one of them text adventure games where every single choice matters. I'd imagine that it's going to be hard to code in and write every little detail, especially with a budget to keep a mind on lol

Not at all! There used to be too many options with little different outcomes and it just made it tedious to see all lines.

Yes, sometimes even when you know exactly what's going to happen after making a choice, you still have no choice but to go through with it

是。所以最近其实有一种拿ai做选项的视觉小说……虽然还不成熟,但我蛮看好这个方向的。

A little, but not as much as when the in-game response options are practically identical, or when they're totally different from how the MC actually reacts tbh XD

It doesn't bother me that much since I've kinda accepted the fact that it's really how VNs as a medium really is. But I really appreciate it when VNs give players more choices or be more creative like in Bustafellows where there was a choice that had a timer (it was a 30 second timer so ample of time to choose without freaking out too much haha)! It makes the game feel more interactive and engaging in a sense
