Normally I would buy stuff like books, but in cases where they are so obviously trying to rip you off, I make an exception.

By the way, another method some people do is taking the book from the library, and then if they are really desperate photocopying relevant pages they need for the course. Sounds like a pain to me (at that point I'd just pay the money, I think), but some people do it. You could also do that if you have a friend in the course (or just share the book, if you have someone in multiple courses with you, and you each buy half the books).
