Download and install LAV, madVR, madFLAC, and Haali. Then download and install PotPlayer. Go to Plugin Management and select the above.

VLC too, I find it most reliable nor does it hog memory like so many others...

I'm actually a little surprised to see that so few actually use it, although come to think about it I can't really recall how I ever came about finding it either....but used it ever since!

That maybe because people tend to be comfortable with thing that they already familiar with. That's why I still stick with MPC.
Never have I ever touch Windows Media Player anymore since I knew MPC.

I used vlc for a long time until i bumped into this CCCP Classic Player thingy on a blog, dunno why I use it now.. but its so shiny and twinkly and so on... No serious D: At first I had some problems with the thing, with I didnt had with the VLC.. but now it just works better, maybe it was the files.. but with the vlc every time I for example stopped the video, and then came back to resume it lagged, the audio didnt but the video lagged.. so in the end I stayed with the classic player (also if I had some other problems but they were not so horrible like the problems I did had with the vlc player) but gladly I now have no problems anymore maybe because an update or so.. uhm AND do not forget the shiny and twinkle part D: I mean come on! Shiny things are just better than no-shiny things! NO EXCEPTIONS!

Um...are you referring to the UI? I'm not exactly sure how a program can be...twinkly....lol, but if it is boy it must hog system resources no?

For me it was finding a program that seemed legit and didn't hog resources. Plus I find the "new" media player bloated.

I used to use MPC all the time but like I mean the classic windows version, I was unaware there has been an improved version until know.

Between MPC and VLC which runs smoother and requires less system resources? I'd be very interested in switching to it...especially since there is a 64bit version which vlc doesn't offer. Will I notice an improvement with the 64bit version?

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about GOM.
I have it too, but mostly just use it to watch hentai & porn, coz we can set repeat at a certain scene(Repeat A-B feature).
Couldn't find that feature in MPC, though, or I didn't know where to find it in MPC.

lol^^ I think not that MPC have that feature, but I also have never heard of half the players beside VLC : / maybe I should do some research. On the other hand Im quite happy with the classic and asking myself why some of you are using different players, like one for music and one for movies/series?

So I tried media player classic..holy crap does it install a mountains worth of crap into your registery and it keeps asking for me to update my directx...I don't think it likes DX11...so back to vlc.

With my old desktop, there are actually three players that I can choose from. With my laptop I just got in June, there's only one...I don't really like that. Because I can play some movies only on my desktop because of the different kinds of players, some I can't see on my laptop because it only has the WMP. I might be able to download other players, but at the moment I have not actually done that...
