To catch a culprit, think like a culprit. Pretend to hang out in someone's room and search for evidence~

Another scenario is that you mention, saying somewhat loudly and casually that 'hey, guess what guys! I got a new laptop even better than before~'. The culprit may overhear it and come to check it out. He might say 'hi' and greet himself as a friend to avoid suspicion.

Hmm i have backups of everything important elsewhere since my laptop crashed every week anyway... and i doubt the culprit would just come along and check out my laptop...

A culprit likes to be 'normal and 'everyone's friend' while doing things you won't suspect.

However, their are 'obvious culprits'... the ones that stick out... Have a little conversation that alludes to the stolen laptop without mentioning about electronics or anything too personal. If he recalls about the stolen product, there is a high chance he'll change subjects, leave soon, or casually dismiss the topic at hand.

If you hold suspicion against someone whether it's strong or not, he/she is not the culprit... yet. Bait the dude who stole the laptop~
