The stuff I do is mostly for businesses, so trying to create something that's not bound by client requirements/corporate image will be an interesting enough exercise, to say the least.

Probably not the kind of pro you may have in mind, though. It (graphics software) becomes easier to be good at once you start enjoying what you create.

What I do isn't really flashy, so the chances of my newly-created signature not being cool are quite high.

ah sig is not always cool or what, IMO sig is represent of our personality, so there isn't such bad sig

I want to see if I can also come up with something - anything. It may not be cool, but then again, I haven't really thought of myself as totally cool, anyway, either. LOL!
