OVAs are usually unrelated to the story since they are original pieces of work. Though in some cases it's the other way round. Take Tsubasa Chronicles for example. The story changed somewhat in the middle and so they had to make up the other half of the anime because the anime caught up too fast to the manga. Years later I think about 1 or 2, they released OVAs to continue from the part that remained unchanged.
