Well, you've always to calculate, that some parts from the originals (Manga/Game/LN/VN) not 100% in a anime adaptation convert can, the producers try so close how possible is to the original lead, but it will no 100% comparison be.~>

I haven't read the manga, but I've seen both seasons of Shikabane Hime (Corpse Princess) with OVA. It's a solid story in it's own right, and well worth watching.

The ending is very interesting in regards to a sequel. The main storyline does conclude, and no further sequel is needed. You can enjoy a finished story.

And yet,

the main protagonist and worst villain survive, locked in battle.

This can be taken as symbolic of the eternal struggle between good and evil, or as an opening for a new storyline.
