And as much as I'd want to join Unown, I'm sure a ghost wouldn't be a suitable member of a family now would it?

It's nice to have a unique family member. Not that appearance actually matters.
 
I'd indeed more view a ghost as some sort of pet, rather then a actual member of a family.
I'm sure I'd not be a too good family member either way.
