Would you still like your favorite LI if they weren't attractive?

i was going to say yes but upper comment made me remember that your boyfriend (was that the name?) game so on second though no NO.

Usually, I go by appearance first when deciding whether to play a route, so it's very likely a no. Even though personality is important, I don't typically play every route, so without the visual appeal factor, it's very possible I'd miss out on playing my favorite character's route.

I usually go by appearance first and personality second when deciding my favorites, and then end up liking completely different characters after finishing the whole game. Though they're still made to look appealing, so I don't think that counts lol. If my faves were made to look straight up ugly, absolutely not 😭

honestly no 😭 i'm not gonna lie their looks are definitely part of why i like them in the first place lmao

For me, personality and chemistry with the MC are everything! Even if looks are equal, a great personality and voice acting will always make a character my favorite.

Tbh a lot of my favourite LIs are ones I wasn't attracted to at all at the start/characters that weren't my first pick.

When I started Nightshade I wasn't into Hanzo at all, I thought he looked pretty plain/underwhelming and I thought his green hair was weird. But after hearing his voice (Kenjiro Tsuda omg), I decided to do his route and was really pleasantly surprised. He's one of my fave otome characters now.

Same thing when I started Mystic Messenger, I wanted to do Jumin's route first since he was the one I was most attracted to. I didn't have enough hourglasses for the deep route though, so I did Zen's route instead. Zen really isn't my physical type either - I'm not particularly into characters with white hair, I dislike red eyes, and I HATEE his ponytail. But omg I fell in love with him hard when I played his route lol.

I guess even though neither of these characters are my physical type, they would still be deemed conventionally attractive. I probably wouldn't be into them if they were straight up ugly lol. But idk a lot of people have pretty unconventional fictional crushes. Like Sans from Undertale or Bill Cypher from Gravity Falls, idk.

I've noticed that in most otome games, almost every LI is conventionally attractive to begin with ofc. It's pretty rare to come across an LI who's genuinely average-looking or unattractive, so I feel like appearance eventually stops being the deciding factor. At least for me, the thing that really makes an LI stand out is their personality (how they treat the protag), their trope, and how well their route is written.

A provocative thought comes in my mind: if every LI had the same level of attractiveness, what actually makes one become your favorite??

If every LI had the same level of attractiveness then of course it would come down to their personality and the content of their route. I know I have a type of character I'm more attracted too. However, I will admit that looks also play a major role in the initial interest I have in a character, but this can easily change depending on their personality. I think your question makes for an interesting concept for an otome game. Like, you have one LI but they have numerous personalities and depending on what you choose, you'll get that version of the LI.

I can't deny that appearance is the first hurdle in deciding whether to get to know someone's personality — I admit I'm just that shallow, haha.😌

Yes i would , since male lead's look isn't my first thing i look at

Honestly, who hasn't fallen for a character with a slightly weird design and a questionable personality/morals? Most of my favorite characters outside of otome games are like that anyway.

There is a big difference between 'unattractive' and 'ugly'. If the character had been made ugly on purpose, then I would only like him if his VA sounded hot. Simply not being attractive visually is not a detriment.

I probably would. What usually attracts me to a character are the tropes and themes of their stories, anyway. I think that good writing can salvage bad art, but not the opposite - if the character is beautiful but the writing is ass the looks aren't enough to keep me interested, I am reading for the love story, after all, If I wanted to stare at pretty images I would just open pinterest and search for handsome anime guys lol. If it was really that ugly that I dislike it no matter what, but the writing is great, I think I'd just ignore the art.
I share this opinion! As long as the characterisation is right and the writing is above average, any chara can land in Top 10 Husbandos of AD 202X. Weird-looking male characters acquire large female fanbases all the time. Just look at Osomatsu-san.

Reading the title and the main question on the post gives will lead for me to give different answers.

If the LI is not attractive: No, I would not. Just as how a very good personality is extremely important to me, I also would want to be attracted to the LI. If I found no psychical attraction to the LI then they would just stay as a friend haha.

If everyone had the same attractiveness: This is how I play my otomes, so yes I would still love them! Every LI has some attractiveness in their own way, some I do not enjoy at all but others love them. Having a pretty face is a starter for me but the deciding factor on who is my favorite and main really falls into personality. If everyone had the same looks but I love their personality, I will go with the better personality.

YESS! I constantly have to defend myself to friends about having some weird attraction or having 'hear me outs' for characters and fighting for my life about how certain aspects of their personality and character makes up for it 🤣

Even outside of the otome space ToT I read a bit of mp100 before the anime and gushed over Reigen (my friends called him ugly and I shared the same sentiments but I was still attracted to him anyways 😆)

Absolutely. It all depends on the writing for me.
But I admit that I'm also shallow with questionable tastes, so I tend to like hot garbage too.

The art style of a game isn't important to me but it is a plus. Besides that I think my ideals translate into fiction as well, I don't care if a character is unattractive. There are plenty of beautiful LIs who I dislike and or have terribly written routes. Not to mention tropes I dislike. I'd much rather play a route I'll enjoy no matter their looks than a route I'll hate with the most beautiful of art work.

Some favorites of mine, yes. One of them is Mr. Chopped (...and he's literally just a head) and I like him a lot! But if we're talking about my number one...no...

My number one fave is Yang.

Love Mr Chopped, but Mr Crawling will always be my fav from Homicipher. He's just so sweet with how genuine he is!

i havent come across non-western games that actually make the characters look different from eachother in the face or body. the first thing that popped into my mind was hector from date everything as an example. hes hidden for the whole game due to self consciousness of being ugly and i wont sugarcoat it, he is not "conventionally attractive" as every other dating game character. hes still the most popular in the fandom due to personality and yearning.
its all in the skill of the artist. if all they can do is either an ikemen or stereotypical ugly bastard, nobody is choosing the latter. if the writers arent scared of giving some non-conventional traits to the design, im all in, thats what id prefer.

He is!! I'm ngl I was a bit scared during my first playthrough when we first see him but the fear disappeared just as quickly when we realize he's being helpful. He is lovely and adorable

Attractive character designs can definitely catch my interest and make me more likely to buy a game, but I don't think they're the most important thing.
I think the scenario itself, including the characters' personalities and actions, is much more important.
There are plenty of romance novels without any illustrations that I can enjoy, but if the story itself is boring, reading them feels like a chore.
