would you enjoy combat aspects if they were added in otome?

if the system would be fun and allow you to pair up with your love interests of your choice in combat mechanics, be it turn-based or rpg (or any other types, i'm an amateur so apologies if i ever talk wrongly about anything related to games and otome)

personally, i enjoy concepts like battle couple, where the heroine can support and fight alongside if the setting the story is allows for something like that.
i also see the appeal of the heroine being supported and rescued instead in dire situations, i don't mean to make light of either and call one side better.

or combat wouldn't really be your thing and you'd rather experience the story told through a visual novel like format with choices that impact to flags/endings?

I think Hana Awase really fits this description, and I really enjoyed it! The story puts an emphasis on the heroine's position as someone who supports the love interests in combat, and I think it's an interesting dynamic that was explored nicely throughout the games. I'd love to see more similar concepts, with games that have actual battle elements alongside the usual visual novel presentation (*^▽^*)

:lapi_annoyed:
It depends.

When combat is added, romance is usually not the priority. If it's turn-based, the story has to be entertaining enough to make the grinding bearable. For me, Persona series is entertaining, while Octopath Traveler is... boring (no offense).

I'd still prefer a classic visual novel otome, maybe with a little mini-game or a moving sprite :romeo:

Even though games like LADs definitely pique my interest, the romance isn't always my cup of tea. If I want combat, I'll just play a JRPG or a souls-like, they have romance too sometimes. I remember playing Nier: Automata and it was beautiful.

I'm not against tha idea, if it's 1). have a difficulty setting and 2). all action combat must be on PC (how are people playing LADs on mobile is beyond me). I'd be very interesting to play a huge completely female-oriented RPG. Basically, just give me finished, one-time purchase LADs on PC and I'll be happy 😭

I enjoy otome games with combat elements, especially battle couples where characters of different strengths can complement or cover for each other, fighting side-by-side.

Early titles like Armen Noir and Bloody Call may not have all perfectly happy endings or perfect storylines, but they were still quite good.

thank you for taking the time to answer to my questions and provide me with smth very interesting to chew on
i looked hana awase up and so far, i only relied on a detailed review about it and one thing i got pleasantly surprised and excited for is that tachibana shinnosuke(hes one of my favorite vas qvq) voices a character in there and the reviewer's opinion about said character is so hilarious to me uvu
+ lmao there even was toshiyuki toyonaga and the reviewer's note was like: ''why is this character's voice so hot?"
i nodded to myself, knowing fully well without even listening the treat this voice actor can provide

i also chuckled over how the reviewer got sidetracked sometimes due to being engrossed into raising their stats which neglected story progression; i feel like that would happen to me too
i would definitely try to look up more about this game, i would like to see how the minigames look like; maybe youtube has some kind people who uploaded playthroughs there =v=
+ oh and i would definitely wanna check the soundtrack, i might have accidentally stumbled into songs from there without being aware it was from hana awase; the art is really distinct and i remember seeing it

i too relate on your take about hoping to see similar concepts intertwined like that; im aware it's difficult to weave smth like that without neglecting one aspect or keeping it entertaining for everyone, but it sure would be nice if it's achievable

thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and offer your insightful opinion =v=7

i enjoyed persona series too, persona 3 in particular felt memorable to me but that's also probably because i haven't ventured deeper in the much older and newer ones;
and i definitely see what you mean; wanting to experience otome without being headlocked by complications is a reasonable given

classic visual + easy to unwind with minigames is definitely a fine balance to have, mm mm

im in the same boat when it comes to LADs, i was interested in its combat aspect and the voice acting in there but i haven't paid more attention to romance tho i'll blame that on my burnout, i don't have the patience to read everything at the moment (which led to my inbox overflowing and the story/dates content piling up endlessly wheeze)

you're right, it does really depend in the end. it's always better to play a game whose genre you're in the mood for than trying to impose smth that might not slot in well

as a casual player, i wholeheartedly opt for the difficulty setting as well🤣
the reason why i'm struggling in LADs endgame is because i can't be halfassed to learn how the darn claymore is wielded, it will always feel clunky to me and i'm not a fan even tho that's the strongest weapon type in there
and sure, many other reasons due to my incompetence but i'm content getting the rewards that i can snatch with my casual skill level; since investment wise, i don't really go that hard in, nor do i bother properly gearing because frankly, the protocore system in there is not fun to me personally

i'd be interested in a game like that too, i'm a sucker for raising up and making my favorite unit shine/get strong :> having a hand in supporting a character i love get powerful is satisfying to me
i hope you'll get to experience more games that make you happy🍀 and thank you for answering to my questions

!! you get it! i couldn't have said it better myself, i exactly enjoy that way of exploring and strengthening a bond like that between characters
thank you for sharing your thoughts and those two games. i will look into them with great interest ovo

since i don't know anything about those two titles it's unfair and presumptuous of me to say this: as long as they brought you joy and entertainment, isn't that what matters? in the end, the value it offers is through what you deemed as being good

I don't really like the combat that much in the game. I am really bad at using patterns to attack the enemy. Thats why I play otome game and simulation game a lot. I am having hard time playing action game. The only action game that I played is Genshin but it take a lot of patience and getting advise from friends. I get sad easily.

i relate to getting sad easily, especially if it's to something i'm not good at doing (which pathetically enough, there's a lot haha)
i play genshin too and it's definitely my first experience i got with combat because i haven't really touched a lot of games, my repertoire is rusty and beginner at best.

i'm glad to hear you have friends that can support you when you play genshin, it beats to being on your own and getting overwhelmed. hopefully you guys will have tons of fun. it might seem intimidating at first, but with time, you'll be able to understand and get a feel for the mechanics. the game is pretty forgiving and i imagine friendly to every type of player. and if it doesn't work out, you can always rely on food to heal and revive with💪

thank you for sharing how you feel about combat in otome. i think i understand where you're coming from, combat weaved with the otome genre is definitely not for everyone, just like any other combination for other things. it all comes to the individual and what they enjoy experiencing

hell yeah for me. I'd enjoy if there's otome game with combat elements cuz it'd be such a fresh gameplay. case in point: fire emblem 🫪
oh yeah! i haven't played fire emblem so i don't know much; if i say anything wrong, you can smite my dumbass

but i think i've heard of stuff like marriage being a thing in the franchise which can affect how you strengthen units in there, that's so cool
so i imagine, if you're really loyal to the character you like in there, not only you're rewarded with their story, but also with combat prowess🔥
thank you for answering my question and i too relate to the appeal of the gameplay feeling fresh if combat is included

Yes! , but I want to be useless and my 5 boyfriends do all the fighting while I cheer like a princess. That's my dream combat system. 👸
cheerleader class, i like that🤣
she cheers for you, now go, boyfriend number 1-2-3-4-5, you're buffed
that doesn't make you useless tho, that makes you essential✨

thank you for answering, i had fun reading that

ur right! the marriage stuff was implemented in FE: Awakening and FE: Fates 😆 Not only the support gives you stats buffs with ur hubbie when you use Pair Up during combat, your child will also inherit some skills you and your husband have ✨

iirc in the games after Awakening and Fates (Three Houses, Three Hopes and Engage), supports only gives you and ur spouse stat buffs. The marriage stuffs are in flavor text of character paired endings when u finish the game

woooh!! thats actually brilliant (and heccing precious), im floored🫪 and to make the skills related to the story the characters got through your choices is chef kiss
my respect goes to fire emblem, ingenious concept! thank you for making me aware of it

Games where you can have a buddy-like relationship with the characters, with romantic elements mixed in, are really fun! But personally, I don't really want RPG or combat elements as part of the system in otome games, because having to repeat battles over and over gets tiring.

I actually quit Love and Deepspace because I gradually got tired of thinking, "Why do I have to fight this much?!" 😂💦

As for non-otome games, I really liked Summon Night, which had that kind of buddy relationship with romantic elements too. Though, to be fair, that one can also be pretty tiring to replay over and over…

I'd rather stick to the classic visual novel format! Heavy combat mechanics or grinding just disrupt the story pacing and romantic immersion. I prefer focusing entirely on narrative choices, emotional build-up, and character dynamics.

Would I like if a thing I like is combined with another thing I like? ABSOLUTELY. Doesn't help that I've spent more time on games w/ combat than otome games. There's a reason why Persona 3 Portable (Femc route) is one of my favorite game of all time. Being able to have some sweet sweet romance that could also have an impact on the already fun gameplay is just a recipe for perfection to me. There's also The Silent Kingdom, an otome game with turn-based combat (still in early access/unfinished though) and the first time I tried it, I got absolutely hooked lol.

YES!! I wish we had more games like this. I really love Fire Emblem for this reason, I love pairing up with my favourite character in battle :3 Same with Persona 3 Portable and Rune Factory 4.

I think the genre would be much more popular if more otome games that weren't just visual novels got localised, e.g. Angelique or Harukanaru Toki no Naka de.

I recently played Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure and it was interesting playing a JRPG that was focused entirely on a female perspective for once! You get to play a girl trying to save the Prince instead of the other way around. It's strange imagining a world where this is the norm, where female perspectives are the ones most being catered to. It makes me a little sad and jealous that this isn't the case.
