I believe every language has its own linguistic culture, so I prefer to read the Japanese text not using any translator. (but my English is disaster. Google translator help me a lot lol )
In particular, the way characters speak and the words they use can reveal their personality traits. For example, they might use keigo, or a mix of keigo and casual speech. So I think reading the original text makes it easier to understand the characterisation.Sometimes relying on translator can leave you unsure of what the character is actually talking about because of the culture barrier. (It seems that some translators consisting AI assistance are doing an excellent job; those sort of issue are don't happen frequently nowadays.)
If there are any unfamiliar words or phrases, I'll simply Google them to find out what they mean. Then I'll look at some articles or sns to see how Japanese people use these words in different contexts.
