Which indie otome did you have no expectations for, but it pleasantly surprised you—and what exactly impressed you about it (graphics, story, characters)? I'd like to find some interesting recommendations.

For me, it's Don't eat the cashier! The visuals and characters are soooo good!

This is an old game I don't hear people talk about much anymore but The Second Reproduction. It's a Japanese indie with an English fan patch.

The protagonist is a sword fighting princess! Her main love interests are her bodyguard knight (very loyal puppy personality) and a foreign demon lord (very standoffish cat personality). I think the voice actors do a good job but they're obviously using cheap mics which I honestly just find endearing.. it feels more.. low-key? real? Anyway two thumbs up (y)(y)

There is one russian indie otome game "Wind & Flame". I am just in love with all characters, story, visuals! Played this game for 5 times.

Have you tried playing Queen of Darkness from the same developer? I would like to try it out, but don't know if it is as good as The Second Reproduction

I really recommend Backstage Pass! I can't believe it's a decade old now. You play through a year in the life of a college student intertwined with Hollywood falling in love with cute guys (and one cute girl iirc). It's a stat rasier a-la Tokimeki Memorial as opposed to a straight visual novel, but the story is still really great and it has good replayability. You can find it up on steam.

A fellow reader 🥹 The only drawback is the length of this game, I'd read 10 more hours of content with these characters 😍

Recently been pleasantly surprised by Sigillvm: Resonance. Story was very hard to read at first, as authors used many made up words and explaned them with even more made up words. But underneath all that there was a meticulous world-building with beautiful characters and a compelling story. Patiently waiting for more games in this universe or a wedding DLC at least

Yes! Actually I liked it even better! But there's no English patch so I decided to recommend The Second Reproduction.

If you are ok with Japanese, Risty is a one-of-a-kind (evil but charming) protagonist. Amazing. But Queen of Darkness is also hard to recommend because
There is an unavoidable rape scene in the prologue. Very hard to recommend to anybody. :o_O: She can get her revenge later, depending on your choices, if that helps??

I loved the atmosphere and language deciphering gameplay of Homicipher! It was such a unique experience. It's so unfortunate that it's popularity brought about the wrong kind of audience and attention to the developer, to the point they had to step back and will likely not publish new games nor update their other project.

Even if TEMPEST. I went in expecting standard indie fare, but the dark fantasy mystery, high-stakes trials, and psychological tension genuinely surprised me. The writing didn't shy away from heavy themes, and the pacing kept me hooked the entire time.

The Blind Prism series by 花*空!

I think it's a bit of a bias since up until then I hadn't played many doujin games. Still, despite the simple plot I actually came to like and care about the characters a lot, and I can tell the developers do too by the amount of attention they put into the narrative; that is something I sometimes find lacking in commercial games from big companies, where the plot often feels lacklustre with inconsistent characters, because so many people are working on the game and their writing clashes with one another.

Other doujin games that I adore for the writing are any TetraScope games (Watajuu, Sakuya, First Complex) and Uesugi Leiji/MORPATH's Club Suicide. I think more people should play them and be surprised at how good they are! 🩷

The quality of The False Sun surprised me a lot, the art is beautiful and there are a lot of CGs, the writing is incredible and atmospheric, and there are a lot of endings. It is truly a gigantic game for an indie.

Our life beginnings and always for me! Found the game on itch.io years ago not expecting much but fell in love with the characters personalities (MA BOY COVE😭🫶)

TELLURICENE!! I really loved how they managed to make a story between a human and an alien work. I loved the unique idea of not shoving an anime guy as the alien but an actual non human entity hehehe

The indie otome game that impressed and surprised me the most in 2026 is *Welcome Home* by Chang, an independent Vietnamese developer. While the plot isn't particularly novel, the game remains intriguing and engaging thanks to its multiple endings. It also features beautiful artwork and includes uncensored R-18 scenes. Best of all, the game is completely free 😋 If you have the time, you should definitely give it a try 😊

It's still a beta but it's pretty much completed I would say The Retrospective Of Tomorrow. In 2 months the full game comes out. I love the time travelling consequences and how everything on start first seems like it is just a normal setting but as you go deeper there's some mysteries you have to uncover.

I ended up getting pretty addicted to the boutique and fashion design gameplay in Tailor Tales. This was years ago before all the extra routes and stuff were added. It's free on itchio and Steam, with paid NSFW dlc.

I recommend SAKUYA! It's the same developer for Wataju: My Super Fulfilling Real Life!
Both the bad ending and the true ending were absolutely amazing, and I cried so much.

I really enjoyed "Drenched In Blue" from itchi.io. The prologue was really good but too bad it hasn't had an update in a while.

Heartcage, i really enjoy the mystery and steamy scene. the voice acting iss so goood, i didnt know the lore would be so deep between MC and her LIs, especially Dane and Sid

Thanks for the recommendation, I've added it to my wish list. The art looks really good for an indie otome, and the plot sounds interesting, I'm intrigued.

Japanese indie game called "Kaguyahime no Matsuei". I already shared the game for the full release without censored content in this website. The art look mediocre, but the story is unpredictable i'm amazed at how the author way to create the story, it was fascinating. Start from incest customary village setting and ended up as psychology, horror, thriller theme.

For me, it's Our Life: Beginnings & Always! I stumbled across it by chance, and I ended up loving it so much. The characters, the writing, the overall atmosphere… everything just clicked with me. It's one of those games that leaves a really special impression on you. I'm also really looking forward to the next game! 🥹💕

I also really liked Tailor Tales! Aiden's route was the first game I played where every dialogue branch had a choice that matched how I wanted to react, The variety in the routes and their settings is also quite nice.

Gunjou no yuki has a great story and I really got attached to the LIs. In general I'm a sucker for stories set in Taishou, but I just loved the atmosphere of the game and the writing was really good. And for being a doujin game, I was really impressed with the voice acting!

Tetrascope games are also some of my favorites regardless of indie or corporate! Watajuu is honestly one of the funniest otome games ever with top tier protag. Writing, graphics, voice acting, everything was amazing. I also loved first complex. I think I must have died a million times playing Hayate's route from squealing. Yoshitsugu route is amazing too. Only complaint I have is that their routes are locked behind 2 routes which I didn't really enjoy, but they were worth it!
