I guess it comes down to that kind of introspection: "Does she love me?" or "Stay away from me, you'd be better off without me."
I'd rather have a character who's confident that even if the MC doesn't love him, he'll change that and win her over somehow.
Instead of constantly showing that insecurity to MC, or even dwelling on it when he's alone. And those who give up easily.
(If someone is going to be shy and insecure, I already have myself and my MC for that.)
That's why I tend to prefer bold, proud, and self-assured characters. They usually don't bothers me.
I can tolerate that kind of insecurity only if I really like other aspects of the character's story, and if it doesn't last long, if it turns out he was simply not being honest with himself.
If it's a little more than that, I'm basically like: "No-no byee"
