What's one trope or type of love interest you absolutely can't stand in otome games?

I guess it comes down to that kind of introspection: "Does she love me?" or "Stay away from me, you'd be better off without me."

I'd rather have a character who's confident that even if the MC doesn't love him, he'll change that and win her over somehow.
Instead of constantly showing that insecurity to MC, or even dwelling on it when he's alone. And those who give up easily.
(If someone is going to be shy and insecure, I already have myself and my MC for that.)

That's why I tend to prefer bold, proud, and self-assured characters. They usually don't bothers me.

I can tolerate that kind of insecurity only if I really like other aspects of the character's story, and if it doesn't last long, if it turns out he was simply not being honest with himself.

If it's a little more than that, I'm basically like: "No-no byee"

I wouldn't say I can't 'stand' them, but they wear me down throughout the game and I'll just feel drained after playing something that was supposed to make me feel good.
1. The LI who always has a jealous ex girlfriend/childhood friend around and absolutely does not set boundaries and makes the mc feel like she's constantly competing with someone she doesn't even want to, just be with your ex girlfriend dude, I don't care. I'll just go find someone without the drama.
2. The jerk/'I know what's good for the mc so I'll just take decisions for her' guy. - we have a lot of that in real life, I don't want to deal with them in something I consider an escape.

Mine is a overly possessive one. It's even worse if they also are jealousy type. I mean I can understand it can be spicy for tension in story. But drama from it sometimes is a bit unnecessary to prove that MC really loves and means for them.

This is probably a niche take but I can't stand overprotective/yandere/bully LI when the FMC is just accepting of their horrible behavior, I'm not a self insert player but I can't stand playing a character that just accepts being put inside a cage or being mistreated constantly without ever barking back. I like strong woman, I need them to fight back. Those type of routes are always the hardest for me because I can't help but feel powerless reading the FMC being abused, mind you I had friends suffer through abusive relationships and seeing those happen in a game make my blood boil lol

Same, this is one of the things I'm not a fan of either. I just feel suffocated and helpless sometimes.

  • playboys
  • ones hung up on past lovers
  • ones who belittle the MC (not in the cute teasing way)
  • violent to MC
  • ones who believe others over MC
  • ones who will not talk with MC over misunderstandings
  • ones that will deliberately ignore or diminish MC's discomfort or feelings
  • arrogance without growth or humility type (i like cocky LI but i need some humanity sprinkled in for flavor)
  • older LI who that's the whole storyline is their age or MC's age. legal!!! age gaps are fine but i don't want underage fetish type of dialogue. in that same trope, ones that act like your parental guardian. taking care of someone is fine but there's an obvious line when you're looking at MC as a child to take care of than a partner.

i like younger tropes but i agree with the ones that act like and look actual children are so not it for me
may these never cross my path anymore.

I am quite tolerant of the protagonist, but there are two things I cannot tolerate. One is that the male protagonist cannot have a white moonlight or someone he truly likes before meeting the female protagonist, and the other is that the male protagonist cannot use the female protagonist as someone else's substitute. These two points are the ones I can't tolerate the most, they really ruin my mentality! I'll just abandon the game!

Womanizers and who flirts always. I understand that often such characters are revealed and you warm up to them. but I mean the first impression from them
I would prefer to sit in a cage with Toma X)

Stepbrother / stepsister. I never see them as love interests and always ignore those routes. Especially if they grew up together since childhood. Ew.

I might not be a big fan of narcissistic or pushy types who are extremely unwilling to listen to others and insist on their own opinions. I think I'd like someone more if they showed respect.
