To be honest, I'm actually more of a fan of western otome games than Japanese ones.
western VNs usually offer more freedom. In Japanese games, there are too many clichés, and the main heroine often feels bland and passive. Plus, you rarely get to choose the protagonist's gender or pronouns — and that's pretty important to me. Another thing: in many Japanese otome games, the heroine is treated either like a child or in a sexist way. Not all of them, of course , there are good exceptions — but the trend is noticeable.
That said, Japanese VNs have amazing voice acting and beautiful art — you can tell a ton of effort went into them.
Western VNs, on the other hand, are usually indie projects made by tiny teams. They have almost no budget, no voice acting, and updates can take months. But despite that, the developers often pour their hearts into the project. It might be technically rough, but it feels alive and genuine. You can feel it. And that's exactly why I love them
