Weird quirks or preferences when you play otome games?

like others said, i hate obnxious kissing/mouth sounds and when the character i wanna play is the locked route :/ especially when i have to play a route i would never do willingly

i also have a bad habit of taking breaks and forgetting about finishing the games i have downloaded so now i have over 20 unfinished games just sitting on my pc (this also happens with shows, animes and books) TT

When you're forced to play through e v e r y o t h e r c h a r a c t e r r o u t e before unlocking the route of the character you ACTUALLY got the game for, that makes me 👁️ 👄 👁️ 🔪 like bro I get you want to let the story unfold a certain way but ain't nobody got time for all that I HAVE WORK TOMORROW JUST LET ME PLAY THE ROUTE FOR THE ONLY CHARACTER I ACTUALLY GIVE A DAMN ABOUT!!!

me when i downloaded virche evermore for ankou and realized i have to get through FOUR other routes </3

I do not know if it is weird, but i really dislike when games do not have a skip function, specially if you have to play starting from the prologue to change routes.
Good lord, I can't imagine playing a visual novel without skip or fast-forward function... surely there are no modern games without such function, right? Replaying the game for different endings is going to be such a chore!

I don't think it's wierd it all - if there is one thing that would make me quit a game, lack of a skip function would definetly be it. Thankfully I don't think I've encountered a game like this in a long time. The closest to it I remember was an unskippable simulation/rhythm gameplay in JackJeanne, which was fun first few routes, but got pretty old to the sixth:akazukin_dead:

That sounds torturous  on that note, I also hate when I set the text speed setting to max but the text still has the "typing effect" if that makes sense (it doesn't just appear instantly it goes letter by letter)

I dont mind that, as long as it makes sense narratively.

Even if Tempest did character routes really well!
You're totally right, I was just joking around, I hope no one takes that seriously. Every game I've been 'forced' to play through various characters I wasn't initially interested in, I do end up engrossed in the story. Especially the slow reveal of tidbits of information in each route just makes you more invested in unlocking all the little secrets, it's one of the joys of playing VNs and ending up really appreciating a game way more than you would have if you'd just played through a portion of it. Also Even if Tempest is such a great game, based EIT enjoyer ❤️

I love any kind of sound that makes the scene more vivid, especially kisses. I'm obsessed with ASMR and Drama CDs of characters. But I have a habit of playing alone most of the time; when there's a romantic scene, I unconsciously get embarrassed if there's someone next to me. Especially with Switch games, I play on the TV, for example. I have a habit (or a bad habit) of playing three games at the same time; I can't contain myself. If I'm not playing, I'm reading something. It was in this way that I read a 400-page book in three days.

Ive had to learn when playing otome / BL titles to leave the character I want to romance most until last (or as close to last as possible in fixed route games) as to not lose steam half way thought XD. In most common routes ill start to pick very obvious favourites and so I have to create like a reward system to get through some of the routes im less interested in playing. Its even worse when im actively playing a route and I actually end up not liking it so I just have to be like in my head "just think of the boy you want, get through this and you can play his story!"

Thats probably my biggest quirk but I have other small ones too, like if there is a scene with a background song I dont like ill actively mute it every time it apears XD. I can not read when all im thinking about is how much I wanna bash the device that made the clown song my ears are being subjected to!

For H games I always over analyse what language they use for smut scenes since when I first read a parade BL game (Specifically no thank you) I immedietly died when the word "sphincter" showed up and then proceeded to show up in every subsequent scene XD. Now in every game I play im forever waiting for my next sphincter moment, wanting to dunk the localisers heads underwater lovingly XD.

I tend to play otome games only when they have a kiss cg, when not i avoid to play it

Sometimes I have to mute the sound effects of the UI when I play! I really appreciate how some studios put a lot of thought into their sound design. But, sometimes the sound effects really takes me out of the immersion in a very serious scene if I want to save or fiddle with the settings.
(Cupid Parasite car honks during Alan's route started this...)

When the male leads are super obsessed with the MC but the MC has no personality, so I'm left wondering why their so obsessed. I like my MCs to have some form of personality so that I can understand why the male lead would fall in love with them. Also when they show the male leads shirtless but they don't have nipples. It's even weirder during h scenes where it's shown that the MC has nipples but not the male lead. It's kinda distracting once you notice the lack of nips.

I'm with you on the kissing sounds, and also other similar sound effects. The first time I played DiaLovers was quite a surprise!! Haha

I'd say my quirk is petnames. Don't like them at all, be it the MC or the LI using them. Nicknames are fine though! Not a deal-breaker, but it will put me off a little.
ughh I hate petnames too, I physically cringe when I read them

I hate bad kissing sounds  they make my skin crawl with disgust when I hear them . I like to listen to voice actors like Kazuyuki Okitsu , his deep voice give me ASMR .

I mostly play with the BGM off to focus on the vocal details and ASMR vibes. But for RPGs, I'll toggle it back on sometimes if the silence feels a bit boring.

Sometimes a character completely loses the traits I liked about him once he falls in love,
and everything turns into over-the-top sweetness. I'm really not a fan of that direction.

I prefer seeing real chemistry and different kinds of sparks between characters,
to just endless sweet lines aimed at the heroine.
And honestly, no matter how vivid or charming the rest of the characters are,
if the heroine is flat and one-dimensional, I just can't truly get emotionally invested in their relationship.

I don't like kissing sound it's just pains my ears.

I specifically hate when you must do other routes before your favourite love interest that picked you interest OMFG diavolik lovers irritate me so much with this.
I don't like self insert MC I like when MC have her own personality I want her to be actually original charafter not just shallow self insert.
And uhh I don't like when in menu I pick options and I listen to li voiceline like dude I just want to change options.

I really dislike self insert MCs, when I'm playing an otome game I want to feel like the protagonist belongs in that world and her existence matters, self inserts makes me feel like an unwelcomed outsider. I also really dislike games with too many unecessary dialogue options, if all the choices only change the flavor of the text and nothing else than why add them

I guess my weird habit is playing through the routes of the characters that I think I'll like the least, so I can have the best one as the last one. Been doing it pretty much since I started playing them, and it makes the experience much more enjoyable for me.

As mentioned earlier, I don't like the "typing effect" either. Also, for certain games, I turn off the characters' voices.

I can be too stubborn to use walkthroughs for choices. While reading the story, I pick choice A, read what happens then go back and try choice B, C too. A lot of times the result is not immediately reflected in the next dialogues, so I just keep going based on my own feelings. I try to drop this habit now because I do not have time to try every single choice anymore

I'm with you all on the kissing sounds lol (for some reason tho DiaLovers is mostly an exception?)

I tend to go with the character that stands out to me looks- and personality-wise (from the unlocked routes if there's locks) for the first playthrough because that's when I'm most invested in the story and everything is still new.

But then I get to the next route and feel sad that that character is indifferent to/hates me now LMAO :C

On the first playthrough, I reach the ending by choosing whatever route comes to mind without consulting a guide.

From the second playthrough onward, I actively pursue characters who made a good first impression.
My criteria for judgment are things like appearance or voice actor.

Also, personally, I believe there's a nutrient that only people with an intellectual aura who wear glasses can administer.
