Shoujo in Japanese means girl and josei means women therefor all manga/anime aimed at girls are shoujo and all that are aimed at woman are josei, rather then genres such as romance, horror, etc. shoujo and josei stand for what is a targeted audience. Otome means maiden and is like a fusion of shoujo and josei in way that it doesn't distinguish between age and all games heavily aimed at females witch includes Snonen-AI and Yaoi are Otome games, because majority of otome games are about romance between a female protagonist and a male characters people often misunderstand that those are the only games that are Otome. In fact if there was a genre bishounen games it would be the on that distinguish between F x M and M x M Otome games just as bishoujo games doesn't include Shoujo-AI and Yuri. True it is true that not all BL games are Otome as while Boys Love is just Shounen-AI translated on English when used in English it meanings change from Shounen-AI to fusion of all male x male genres inducing Shounen-AI and Yaoi witch are aimed at females but as well a 3rd male x male genre (of witch I can't remember a name) witch unlike the first 2 is aimed at male homosexuals. With all that said genres sometimes change with time as so do their definitions and sometimes there is no a single clear definition for a genre, like an RPG in a west, gather 10 hardcore gamers and ask them for definition of RPG and you'll probably get a 10 different definitions. True this forum seems to be far more lax then just overlooking some games that could be debated whatever they are or are not otome but also allows request of some that are clearly not so i Guess it doesn't really mater.
"...because majority of otome games are about romance between a female protagonist and a male characters people often misunderstand that those are the only games that are Otome."
Very true! I already discussed this likely being the fault of general ignorance and Western marketing. However, this DOES NOT mean that M x M games aimed for females are otome games. You are on the same boat as those confused people, but in a different manner.
I'll repeat:
"乙女ゲーム(おとめゲーム)とは、女性向け恋愛ゲームのうち、主人公(プレーヤー)が女性のゲームの総称である。"
~ ""Otome game" refers to the the general term used for
female-targeted romance games in which the protagonist (the player character) is a female."
"一方、主人公と恋愛対象が共に男性である作品は、乙女ゲームではなくボーイズラブゲームという別ジャンルに分類される。"
~ "On the other hand, titles in which
both the protagonist and the love interests are male aren't otome games,
but categorised as a different genre called "Boys' Love.""
I have no idea why you went on the shoujo/josei diatribe (which is unneeded, considering I'm not some weaboo out of my depth), but anyway... The reason why I brought up "shoujo" in the first place is because I was acknowledging one of the reasons why people get confused. Otome and BL
originated from, as in
"inspired by" shoujo manga. They both have the same target audience (young women), highly similar conventions, but are not the same thing because of the gender of the protagonists, as I've repeated mulitple times.
Also, the term you were looking for is "bara (薔薇)" (M x M for homosexual men).
Funny you should mention "ask multiple people" about a genre definition. That is a terrible debating point ("society says so"; "[X] amount of people said [Y] so it must be true/untrue", etc. arguments are not good and factually unsound). Actually, if we're to go by that faulty assertion, I'd "be in the right" so far, seeing as I'm supported by Wikipedia and my forum peers whom have "Thanked" and "Liked" my definition more than yours. Really, I hope that sounds silly.
Also, comparing "RPG" with "otome game" in this sense is fallacious. First of all, the definition of "RPG" is broad and not concretely defined by just "RPG" alone- just saying "RPG" could mean a plethora of things. First of all, are we talking video games, tabletop games or live action? Presuming you mean video games, the general gist would be "player controls actions of main character(s),
usually in a party,
often customisable and
mostly accompanied by a well-established story and setting". That tells me mechanics, but not much else that is
concrete.
Whereas "otome game" is already
clearly defined since its beginnings, given its niche status. It was, and always has been
"female-targeted romance games in which the protagonist (the player character) is a female." There's no vague descriptors like "
usually a romance" or "
often a female protagonist" in its definition. Otome games are
defined specifically. Yes, it can include other genre elements and its degree of romanticism can vary, but at its core, any otome game is
a romance game in which the player assumes the role of a female protagonist. Anything else and it can no longer be considered an otome game. If it's a male protagonist, it's not an otome game. If the story has no romance/coupling whatsoever, it's no longer an otome game.
Which brings me to this reiteration.
As soon as the protagonist is male, even though the love interests are male and the target audience is the same, it is referred to as BL.
It is no longer considered an otome game:"On the other hand, titles in which both the protagonist and the love interests are male aren't otome games, but categorised as a different genre called "Boys' Love.""
Please stop spreading misinformation. Putting aside the fact that you have no evidence to back your claims up (I'm willing to stand corrected if I'm proven wrong), it's bad enough that many uninformed people refer to otome fans as "fujoshi" precisely because this kind of confusion.
Ignoring facts that directly contradict your misinformed viewpoints makes you look petulant and stubborn.
