The protagonist seems to be female, so I assumed that it is an otome game. But if I am mistaken, I apologize for my mistake, and mods can move this thread to the Miscellaneous Request section.
Regarding the VN itself, It has an interesting premise, and it'll be great if anyone could upload it! Thanks! :)

To better inform you, the basic definition of an an otome game is "a female audience-targeted story-centric video game in which players assume the role of a female protagnist."

Since otome games are story-centric, they're typically in a visual novel format with some of them having simulation elements. Due to the predominantly young heterosexual female audience, romance is heavily featured in most titles and the largest goal of most otome games is to establish a romantic relationship with a male love interest. While some otome games opt to have a heavier emphasis on its overall story rather than romance (such as both Black Wolves Saga games), all otome games will include romancing love interests to large degrees. Male love interests are the focus of 99% of otome games due to the primary target demographic, but otome games featuring some or only female love interests do exist.

As such, since Sound of Drop isn't targeted explicitly towards a female audience, I suggest you request this game in the Miscellaneous section.

I think you're being a little strict on this. Many people in the past requested random visual novels on the Otome Games Request section and the moderators on AS had no problems with it. The thing is, the Miscellaneous Request section is a bit all over the place, in my opinion, and I blame the moderators partially for not keeping an eye on it. The Otome Games section is a bit neater-looking and I believe some of the users who request visual novels on this section feel a little bit more comfortable with it because they're familiar with how things work around here. Maybe they have requested Otome Games on here so they think it's alright to request other visual novels here. We shouldn't be too harsh on everything AS users do. We should be welcoming more and friendlier. Yes, I agree requesting PS Vita games and games before their release dates gets a bit annoying. Sakimichi hasn't said anything about it, so why should you be so patrolling the Otome Games Request section telling people that they shouldn't do this or that? I have requested several visual novels in the past that didn't have much to do with Otome Games, and no-one said anything to me. They didn't tell me off. Other people have done the same, so I guess it's fine. Sakimichi hasn't said anything and she's one of the mods of the Otome section. She even uploaded a visual novel called "The Stolen Diamond Ring" that had nothing to do with Otome Games on the Otome Games & Artbooks section. We are allowed to request Otome, Yaoi, Yuri, and any Visual Novel games on the Otome Games Request Section.

...Then I wonder what's the point of having sections at all if people technically can request whatever they want wherever they want? I honestly presumed that since this section is described by AS like so:

"This section is reserved for all otome games and artbooks..."

It meant exactly just that: A section especially made only for otome games and artbooks. Perhaps they should change the wording.

It seems that the Otome section isn't very strictly policed. Depending on who you ask, this is a good or bad thing. IMO, in a sense I think this a good thing, but of course, because of this, time after time, stupid request after stupid request gets posted by users too lazy or ignorant to read and/or follow basic rules.

Which brings me to my next opinion: I am happy to welcome new users who make an effort to follow basic rules. I do like and care about the Otome section (which is why I've felt the need to be more direct about the asshattery going on lately in the first place) and enjoy interacting with the AS users here. HOWEVER, when it comes to the users who think that they can do whatever they want, don't adhere to perfectly reasonable rules but expect all the same perks as the majority of other users who do their best to follow the rules, etc... I won't pretend to welcome them. In fact, I rather they don't ever come back unless they're willing to play fair.

That all being said, however, you raise a very good point and I thank you for it: Sakimichi hasn't really issued strong directives about the "issues" of the Otome section, as far as I'm aware. Obviously, I have a different opinion about what should constitute as a "proper" Otome/BL request, but in the end, I respect her moderation.

I meant no disrespect to her when I suggested that AS users requesting non-Otome or BL games go to the Misc. section. I do think I'm being helpful (since one mod can't be there for every single post), but it seems that I've gone overboard at times. I'll be more careful.

Thanks for being honest with me, tgywal.

Thanks, woo...:happytears: :donefor: I was sweating typing up that last post. :reallyconfused: I didn't know if your response was either going to be agreeing or hostile. We're allowed to request any visual novels here, but we're not allowed to request Hentai visual novels here. Only if they're Otome or Yaoi/BL Hentai visual novels, then we request them here. :)

Not all Otome games have female protagonists as BL, Shonen-AI and Yaoi are also part of Otome games. Otome really only means that it is mainly aimed at female audience.

But yes this one is not an Otome game. But putting that aside I want to request this one too.

Not quite. It's an understandable misconception, but I 'm sick of people categorising BL and otome under the same arbitrary "OTOME" umbrella. This isn't helped by AS lumping otome and BL together under "Otome". I would officially call this section the "Otome and BL Section", but anyway...

While their origins are similar (simply put, conventions and themes inspired by shoujo/josei manga) and some (again, some, not ALL. This matters to a lot to some fans) gamers of either genre do like the other, this doesn't mean the two genres can be considered as being "otome".

This confusion likely has arisen amongst (especially, non-Japanese speaking) fans because otome games are marketed by the West as simply "romance games for girls", instead of the more correct categorisation of "romance games for girls in which players assume the role of a female protagonist". It doesn't help that the English Wikipedia entry's definition isn't completely correct (in spite of a large chunk of it just translating the Japanese Wikipedia entry).

Definitions provided by Japanese Wikipedia:

"乙女ゲーム(おとめゲーム)とは、女性向け恋愛ゲームのうち、主人公(プレーヤー)が女性のゲームの総称である。"
~ ""Otome game" refers to the the general term used for female-targeted romance games in which the protagonist (the player character) is a female."

"一方、主人公と恋愛対象が共に男性である作品は、乙女ゲームではなくボーイズラブゲームという別ジャンルに分類される。"
~ "On the hand, titles in which both the protagonist and the love interests are male aren't otome games, but categorised as a different genre called "Boys' Love.""

ALL otome games have female protagonists. ALL BL games have male protagonists. This is actually one of the largest distinctions between otome and BL, aside from the fact that the former typically focuses on heterosexual F x M relationships and the latter focuses on homosexual M x M relationships. The confusion is made worse by how the tropes and conventions present both genres are very similar- again, because of their same origins: shoujo/josei manga.

In fact, the reason why otome games was called as such instead of "bidanshi game" (the literal opposite of "bishoujo game") was to make a distinction between otome games and BL games as both would obviously involve stories about romancing good-looking men that is targeted towards a female audience.

TL;DR: Both have conventions, themes, tropes, etc. that originate from shoujo and josei manga. Both are targeted towards female audiences. The titles of both genres are almost wholly developed by female creators. Many otome fans enjoy BL and vice-versa. HOWEVER, aside from the genre names, they're distinguished from one another by the gender of the protagonist.

That all being said, I've recently learned there aren't any real rules about what to suggest here (aside from needing to request male-targeted eroge in the appropriate section), so Brilliant Shadows is apparently OK to be requested here.

Shoujo in Japanese means girl and josei means women therefor all manga/anime aimed at girls are shoujo and all that are aimed at woman are josei, rather then genres such as romance, horror, etc. shoujo and josei stand for what is a targeted audience. Otome means maiden and is like a fusion of shoujo and josei in way that it doesn't distinguish between age and all games heavily aimed at females witch includes Snonen-AI and Yaoi are Otome games, because majority of otome games are about romance between a female protagonist and a male characters people often misunderstand that those are the only games that are Otome. In fact if there was a genre bishounen games it would be the on that distinguish between F x M and M x M Otome games just as bishoujo games doesn't include Shoujo-AI and Yuri. True it is true that not all BL games are Otome as while Boys Love is just Shounen-AI translated on English when used in English it meanings change from Shounen-AI to fusion of all male x male genres inducing Shounen-AI and Yaoi witch are aimed at females but as well a 3rd male x male genre (of witch I can't remember a name) witch unlike the first 2 is aimed at male homosexuals. With all that said genres sometimes change with time as so do their definitions and sometimes there is no a single clear definition for a genre, like an RPG in a west, gather 10 hardcore gamers and ask them for definition of RPG and you'll probably get a 10 different definitions. True this forum seems to be far more lax then just overlooking some games that could be debated whatever they are or are not otome but also allows request of some that are clearly not so i Guess it doesn't really mater.

"...because majority of otome games are about romance between a female protagonist and a male characters people often misunderstand that those are the only games that are Otome."
Very true! I already discussed this likely being the fault of general ignorance and Western marketing. However, this DOES NOT mean that M x M games aimed for females are otome games. You are on the same boat as those confused people, but in a different manner.

I'll repeat:

"乙女ゲーム(おとめゲーム)とは、女性向け恋愛ゲームのうち、主人公(プレーヤー)が女性のゲームの総称である。"
~ ""Otome game" refers to the the general term used for female-targeted romance games in which the protagonist (the player character) is a female."

"一方、主人公と恋愛対象が共に男性である作品は、乙女ゲームではなくボーイズラブゲームという別ジャンルに分類される。"
~ "On the other hand, titles in which both the protagonist and the love interests are male aren't otome games, but categorised as a different genre called "Boys' Love.""

I have no idea why you went on the shoujo/josei diatribe (which is unneeded, considering I'm not some weaboo out of my depth), but anyway... The reason why I brought up "shoujo" in the first place is because I was acknowledging one of the reasons why people get confused. Otome and BL originated from, as in "inspired by" shoujo manga. They both have the same target audience (young women), highly similar conventions, but are not the same thing because of the gender of the protagonists, as I've repeated mulitple times.

Also, the term you were looking for is "bara (薔薇)" (M x M for homosexual men).

Funny you should mention "ask multiple people" about a genre definition. That is a terrible debating point ("society says so"; "[X] amount of people said [Y] so it must be true/untrue", etc. arguments are not good and factually unsound). Actually, if we're to go by that faulty assertion, I'd "be in the right" so far, seeing as I'm supported by Wikipedia and my forum peers whom have "Thanked" and "Liked" my definition more than yours. Really, I hope that sounds silly.

Also, comparing "RPG" with "otome game" in this sense is fallacious. First of all, the definition of "RPG" is broad and not concretely defined by just "RPG" alone- just saying "RPG" could mean a plethora of things. First of all, are we talking video games, tabletop games or live action? Presuming you mean video games, the general gist would be "player controls actions of main character(s), usually in a party, often customisable and mostly accompanied by a well-established story and setting". That tells me mechanics, but not much else that is concrete.

Whereas "otome game" is already clearly defined since its beginnings, given its niche status. It was, and always has been "female-targeted romance games in which the protagonist (the player character) is a female." There's no vague descriptors like "usually a romance" or "often a female protagonist" in its definition. Otome games are defined specifically. Yes, it can include other genre elements and its degree of romanticism can vary, but at its core, any otome game is a romance game in which the player assumes the role of a female protagonist. Anything else and it can no longer be considered an otome game. If it's a male protagonist, it's not an otome game. If the story has no romance/coupling whatsoever, it's no longer an otome game.

Which brings me to this reiteration. As soon as the protagonist is male, even though the love interests are male and the target audience is the same, it is referred to as BL. It is no longer considered an otome game:"On the other hand, titles in which both the protagonist and the love interests are male aren't otome games, but categorised as a different genre called "Boys' Love.""

Please stop spreading misinformation. Putting aside the fact that you have no evidence to back your claims up (I'm willing to stand corrected if I'm proven wrong), it's bad enough that many uninformed people refer to otome fans as "fujoshi" precisely because this kind of confusion.

Ignoring facts that directly contradict your misinformed viewpoints makes you look petulant and stubborn.

I won't argue any further but I just want to correct you on one thing you misunderstood. I specifically said ask multiple hardcore gamers as in professionals in a field who should be well informed and know what they are talking about and even then I didn't say more say answer is X, X is correct, but wanted to point out that by having professionals argue about it is a fact that there is no clear definition for it.

Back on the topic it has been 3 weeks since the release of Sound of Drop/Shizuku no Oto I am surprised to see that nobody has yet uploaded it, does anyone know what is going on with it?

"Hardcore gamers" isn't synonymous with "professionals in the field". You should have said "creators/developers" if you wanted to get your point across as they're the ones pioneering innovations in game genres and stretch boundaries. Even then, "just because [X] said so" without any evidence to back your claims up is a weak argument. Whatever the case, comparing RPGs and otome games in that sense was fallcious and it's baffling you can't see the fault in that logic.

Whatever the case, I'm not seeing any "professional otome game devs" arguing about the definition of otome games, or causing people to think about redefining it. In fact, they're quite happy to cater to people's expectations without yearning for any changes/innovations/twists to their money-making formula. Not that there is a lot of room for innovative game mechanics in otome gaming due to the ADV format, but even 90% of the stories are essentially identical- all you need to do is change the aesthetics and give new names and voila! "new" otome game.

I'll go back on topic as well: Sound of Drop isn't the kind of game that'd attract a lot of hype in this section. Most people come here for otome and/or BL games. Furthermore, most of the characters are female, and this is a 90% "BISHIE FANGURL!!11!1!" section. Moreover, there doesn't appear to be any romance, and most otome/BL fans seek romance in their games. Plus it's common for less commercial otome/BL games to get requests that nobody can answer to.

But in that case is it aright to open a new request thread in a more appropriate section, and if yes what would the more appropriate section even be? As the only other section regarding requests for games is for Hentai games as far as I see.

I think it'd be fine and you'd have to go with the Miscellaneous Request section since it's non-hentai.
