Phrase Usage Question : "なんで私がこんな目に"

There's a phrase なんで私がこんな目に (nande watashi ga konna me ni) that I encounter from time to time usually when a person is in a troubled state of some sort.
How does it translate as a sentence? And can someone explain what it really expresses? Like a counterpart/parallel phrase in English language.

Some Japanese-English translation sites make the following translations.
"Why should I have a hard time like this?"
"Why must I have such a terrible experience?"
Or, simply, "Why me!?"

The following points shall be considered for translation:

1. In this sentence, "目" doesn't mean "eye" but also "experience".
こんな目 / Kon'na Me / such a (bad) experience
大変な目 / Taihen na Me / a troubling experience
辛い目 / Tsurai Me / bitter experience

2. There is no verb in the sentence.
なんで [interrog] 私 [pron] が [particle] こんな [adj] 目 [n] に [particle]
In fact, there is an idiom: "目に遭う" / Me ni Au : to have a bad experience.
So full sentence will be "なんで私がこんな目に遭うのか" or "なんで私がこんな目に遭わなければならないのか".

Literal translation:
私がこんな目に遭う : I have such a bad experience.
なんで私がこんな目に遭うのか : Why do I have such a bad experience?
なんで私がこんな目に遭わなければならないのか : Why should I have such a bad experience?
