How do you pick your otome game?

The plot and the art. I can't really choose without both, 'cause if the plot is good but the art isn't, that'd be such a shame. Same goes the other way around.

The art is definitely the biggest factor for me! Honestly, if I don't like the art style, I have a hard time getting myself to play the game... even if everyone says it's a masterpiece.

I also like to look into what else the team behind the game has worked on and see if there are any titles I've enjoyed before. Other people's reviews and experiences with the game are pretty important to me too!

And surprisingly, the team behind the game's previous work actually matters quite a lot to me. If they've made a game that I didn't particularly enjoy, I tend to hesitate when it comes to their newer games, no matter how pretty the art is...

The most important thing for me is the cast, if I'm not interested in the characters then I will not bother to play. After that I will say that the premise and finally the art.

At first, I decide whether to look into a game further based on whether I like the artwork.
If there's a character whose appearance really catches my eye, or if the story sounds like something I'd enjoy, I'll decide to buy it right away.
If I'm not interested enough to make an immediate decision, the overall feel of the story, the character lineup, and reviews are also important factors in deciding whether to buy it.

First is whether it has my favorite seiyuu. If not, whether the plot can pique my interest, artstyle to me is not very important, but I can't deny the fact that I played many games because of art only, knowing full well about the bad writing.

For me, it's mostly the setting! Good art is definitely a bonus, but if the premise doesn't catch my interest, I won't really feel like playing it. And if the game is already out, I usually check the reviews too. Sometimes a really passionate or funny recommendation is enough to make me want to play it!

I usually pick games based on the art style first, then check the reviews and ratings. If the score is too low, I hesitate, there's almost always a good reason for it. I once jumped into a poorly rated game just because I loved the art, and I deeply regretted it.

The theme is equally important, and the art usually hints at the overall tone. For example, a darker game will lean into a specific, moody color palette. Personally, I can't stand toxic melodrama or NTR, so if I spot any of those elements, I stay far away.

That said, if a game's art isn't quite my style but its ratings are through the roof, I'll still give it a shot, knowing I'm strictly playing it for the plot.

I often choose first by tags (genre, setting, tropes) and then by general overview. art style is not a decisive factor if i'm not interested in everything else

It's gotta be a combo of both story and art for me. But honestly, I'd say the story matters more — 'cause when the characters look great but the plot is weak, it's a real struggle to finish the game lol.

I usually pick it from the story and art first, but I also read the reviews before I decided whether to play it or not.

From the art style,
but sometimes based on the genre, if the story and genre are dark enough, I'll be easily attracted

If the characters look appealing and the art draws me in, I'll check the premise and reviews. Story is important too, but if I don't like the visuals, it's hard for me to get invested.

Me too. The art/visual plays a huge role for my first impression definitely. Then I will look for the plot and see if it attracts me. If both look good enough to me I will go and play the game.

I would try to see if the plot is good which is my first priority. The second step is art and cg of the characters which is my second rank. Then the third rank is how it match my genre of horror which I like or funny one light hearted for break. I would not choose game based on how overrated the game is from the reviews. I care about how I want and analysis it myself before buying the otome game.

The first thing I look at are the LIs themselves—their personalities, ideals, and attitude toward the MC. Overall plot and quality of the writing are important, too. I usually check for recommendations on otome forums and pick titles based on them.
