Has anyone else started learning Japanese just for otome?

yess!! i do try when i feel like it or when i know the game isnt very advanced kanji heavy! i usually go on and off when it comes to learning even if i watch a lot of jp vtubers on the daily <//3 sometimes i get the gist of what they're saying but i cant read the kanji...

kanji is pretty complicated so i mostly try to learn w/ an otoge if it's more on the modern genres or in a school setting (like tmgs) because the dialogue is easier to understand & the kanji isnt too foreign for me...except that most of the unlocalized otoges that im interested in have too advanced kanji & are on the fantasy/historical type of setting so i dont really have the patience to focus and learn while playing for them yet > <;; but it's definitely a goal to finish an otoge without a translator/before it gets localized haha

Me too. My main motivator was playing otome games. I took a beginner class in college and self studied from there. Now I can play otome games and read webnovel in japanese.

I figured I can start with Kiniro no Corda 3 full voice version when I started learning Japanese due to 1. I have musical knowledge 2. all lines were spoken and 3. I am better at listening than reading. Obviously I overestimated myself, I spent some time to familiarize with the system then only focus on learning Japanese, sometimes quick load just to see the expression and relationship point changes. Thank goodness the walkthrough helped tremendously.

kanji is easier to learn within words, not separately, so otoge are the way to go for your vocab to grow

welll..... i can say that i start learn japanese because some manga never get translated but when i discover BL games OMG.... my dream was just play and read everything so you can say yeah i get more involve because the visual novels

I learned the basics by myself, then moved on to radio content for casual immersion. Now I'm fully immersed in otoge, so I really want to improve and stop relying on a translator! :geek:

Definitely look at the immersion tools in the pinned comment.
JL on screen reader or Meikipop are good lightweight tools.

Yes !! I'm still wonky with the hiragana because I have been busy with life but currently using Bunpo and HeyJapan app in order to improve my japanese. I hope one day I would be able to experience all the japanese otome since I am limited with the english localized currently. I really want to try dance with devils, KLAP, Reine des fleurs, Binary Star and etc.

I'm trying to learn Japanese on my own because there are so many unlocalized otome games that look cool and fun. One of the ones I most want to play is La Corda d'Oro and Clock Zero. I managed to finish Real Rode with the help of a translator and started playing Glass Heart Princess a few years ago (I only managed to finish Yukito's route and ended up having to delete the game from my phone due to low memory space, but now that it's out for Switch I plan to play it soon). I'm trying to read more manga in Japanese since some have hiragana over the kanji, but I have difficulty finding websites with manga in Japanese, so I've been on hold from my studies for a looong while XD

I learns Japanese by myself at 11 just like any otakus out there :) starting from basic hiragana+katakana my listening skill come from listening to drama cds, stan JP Idol girl groups and of course anime! I never force myself to remember anything it's entirely natural learning(as a hobby), then from 13+ onwards I starts to remember kanji from anime songs etc. and play games in japanese with helps from online dictionary/sites for the kanji I don't know, then the hardest part is around here when I tried to play japanese VN for the first time, it's hard! but then again I learns a lot from it! just don't be discourage by the difficulty! (ppl says I have my own way of learning so my method might not work for everyone) my skill is not perfect but it enough for me to get the context and story... (I never use translator... even tho it'll be easier to read. maybe I'll look for it later) good luck for people that currently starts learning japanese :)

I started because i was waiting for one BL game (ooe): i started before it came out, and i knew beforehand that there won't be any good translation for a year or two. But i used otome vns as a study material.

I finished some basic study books (Genki 1 and 2) + some simple reading materials, and just went to read some VNs right away. I used Google for finding grammar and Google Translate (to write kanjis) + Yomitan + Anki to study new words. I started with 9 R.I.P. and it was PAINFULLY slow, honestly, and i can't say i enjoyed reading much at first because of it, but by the time i finished first route (Hibiki) i was already reading better and liked it. Then I finished two routes for Hakuoki (because of its famous bad english localization) and half of Club Suicide, but both were a lot harder than 9 R.I.P and took a lot of time.

Even now, studiyng language while enjoying it at the same time is the best part. Good luck to everyone who are starting and to everyone who are still learning :>

YES. There's so much game which I cannot try on hooker. My listening and speaking skill is not bad, but reading skill still needs a lot of work.

For me it was kind of the opposite, I found VNs to be the best way to learn a language. But I really enjoyed playing them to the point I'm now playing English releases for the ones I really like. I should stick to japanese though but I'm getting lazy..

i tried when i first got into it but i didn't really know where to start ya know...? or maybe my mind was just elsewhere during that hectic year.

Join the discord! its always best to start with the basics, like LETTERS. That is where english learners start.
