Do you prefer a "no personality" MC or a "set personality" one?

I love characters with distinct personalities. Honestly, I don't care if the male lead is talking to me; I just want to see these two spark!
Compared to female leads who are like blank slates, blindly following the male lead's every whim, I much prefer protagonists with tempers, brains, and even a touch of madness. When she has her own principles, fights back, and experiences heartbreak, the male lead's love feels weighty. Watching them go from mutual dislike to being inseparable, that sense of destiny—"Help, they're so perfect for each other!"—makes me scream more than any sweet talk.
I won't change my name, and I don't want to project myself into their lives; I just want to be the one sitting on a small stool next to them, eating popcorn and urging them to kiss. Watching two people with such different personalities torment and redeem each other in the script—that sweet feeling of romance is the ultimate enjoyment in story-driven otome games!

I definetly prefer MCs with set personality. I often self-inserted in the past and couldn't enjoy otome games or even shoujo manga because the girls wouldn't look or behave like I would. But then I decided to stop doing that and I've been enjoying myself so far ^_^"

I would also say a little of both. I lean towards a set personality but if it annoys me it ruins the whole game for me...

I prefer MCs with a personality, preferably an actual personality different from kind and cheery (since I feel I see A LOT of those types). Give me headstrong MCs. Give me shy MCs. I like seeing the relationship grow between the two characters, because while I do kind of self-insert, it's not completely. Kind of like why I could never get into Y/N fanfictions.

if i had to choose it would be with set personality, its so fun seeing and playing the game through the perspective and mindset of the heroine. I esp love it when they have voices. The no personality heroines makes me feel like sometimes the LIs are talking to a wall.

mhm, depends. My default would be self-insert but if the MC is just that great of a character and she's so effing lovely, baby, forget about me, THIS is ABOUT YOU! Let me love you, baby girl~ Let's see which guy gets to date my lovely baby girl. If they're unworthy, I'll kick them to the curb. We won't even spare a second glance at that deadbeat.

I love the heroines with personality, especially the bold ones. I'd love to see my girls express their own thoughts, grow, and love in their own way. Since we're all walking the journey through heroines' perspective. I want her to have an impact on her own world, her story. For me, after all, Otome games are games of those heroines, in fact, my girls' games ;)

Set personality!!! Sometimes a "no personality" MC can be a bit bland and sometimes their choices and words doesn't really define them as a proper character, and I find it hard to see that the romanceable characters falling in love with an mc that's basically a blank sheet. Those with unique personalities makes the game more memorable too :)

I think I prefer MC with personality because it will make whatever choice I choose impactful to MC's reaction for what I choose. But I also like MC with no personality as well in some type of game.

I like MCs with set personality. Especially mc in Shinigami to Shoujo. They are introverted, have a delicate and complex inner world, think in a pessimistic and negative way, have low self-worth but high self-respect. They want to get close to people, yet push away the hands that try to hold them. Mcs suppress their true self, trying hard to become what others expect. They long for a real connection, but can never let down their guard. They crave unconditional love, yet clearly know it's impossible, and so fall into self-hatred... Characters like this are similar to my personality, so they are suitable for me.

I'm fine with no personality as long as the choices I make matter in the narrative, that the choices build into a personality, that the choices I make are ultimately a reflection of myself, and they impact the larger narrative, kind of like a choose your own adventure book, or like Netflix's bandersnatch, that was cool. But i imagine it's hard to write a coherent emotive story like that, so I'd rather have a fleshed MC with direction, purpose, and personality rather than gamble.

I prefer MCs with personality, no matter what it is, weak or smart. I have no issue with the MC, unless the MC is too stupid or does dumb actions. I like being an outside observer of the story more than being the main character of the game.

I like a mc with personality, I find the more blank ones don't have as many interesting choices throughout the story.

I like MCs with no set personality. Or, I really enjoy MCs with more realistic personalities, like Alice from QuinRose's Alice series.

Prefer a personality … I have a difficult time self inserting since most games I play have a set mc with a backstory

I prefer when MC has a set foundation of personality, core values but is still shapeble by me. Like I can decide how she reacts or speaks (Arcana Famiglia and OzRequiemz).

I'm in "no personality, but I can create MCs personality" team. I usually always play as kind and helpful MCs, but I really like to add a little dorkness/lightness or sudden seriousness depending on the plot and situations.

Here's my take on it!
  • If it's a no-personality MC, the customization/flavor texting has to be really good
  • If it's a set personality, I'm okay so long as the choices are not too far from my morals or a dealbreaker

I like those new otome game where they give you a list where you can "chose" a personality kind of like the morality chart in demonheart series. It make it feel like the character is me instead of me inserting myself in. But if the protagonist is well written i don't really mind unless she overbearing and annoying then yeah i lose all interest.
