Canon MC name vs Self-Insert?

I always go for the canon name if available. And even if the mc doesn't have any, I still won't use my own name because I kind of feel ridiculous or even cringy when I see my own name in the game, especially in the romantic scenes lol. Instead, I have kind of a "set" personal name depending on the game's story/world. If the game is set in Japan/the other characters use Japanese names, I'd name my mc "Miki". If the world/story isn't set in Japan or is ambiguous, I'd use the name "Agatha", which is also the name of the main character of one of my favorite fantasy book series.

Likewise. I prefer to leave the protagonist's name as it is. And if it's necessary to add a name, I always choose one that isn't my own.
 
I mainly use the canon name but I remember in the first otome game I properly played, I used a name of one of my OCs because I really liked a certain LI (mainly for his voice and personality). Other than that, canon name all the way bc they're primarily voiced!

Definitely canon MC name! I usually prefer keeping the protagonist's original name because it makes the story feel more natural to me. I also like seeing the MC as her own character rather than imagining myself in her place. It makes it easier for me to enjoy her personality and relationships with the LIs

When the character is already set in place I take the canon name feels more cohesive with the story especially if the mic has a distinctive personality! (Love my Yui🥹)
 
it depends for me? i think i go for default name bc it's sometimes voiced in japanese otomes while in western i sometimes pick a name
 
I used to self-insert, but I realized my name doesn't really go well with Japanese last names, so now I use the canon MC name. 😅 Makes things less awkward, and It doesn't make me feel any less immersed tbh.
 
It turns out quite a few people use the official character names. Personally, I think it's better to view the protagonist as a character in their own right and immerse in the experience that way.
