Buying a Switch for Otome

A switch is worth it. However to play games you download here you will need a modded switch. But the more we support the publishers by buying the games, the more we will get.

If its worth it or not mainly depends on how you prefer to actually play games! Like if you have acess to a PC / Laptop most visual novels are available on those platforms but a lot of people prefer hand held gaming and the nature of a visual novels gameplay being majority reading means the "gameplay" doesnt change much between platforms (you either click a mouse or press the A button really XD)

The switch has loads of otome games so you wont be pressed for choice but fair warning that if your after anything NSFW youll be out of luck, a majority of Otome and BL games that get ported over to switch with those elements will get the censored treatment. If your only after SFW titles tho you wont be missing anything too major! (switch titles can also be a bit expensive also and are less likely to go on sale as frequently as their PC counterparts and there can be price discrepancies also with some games being more expensive as a switch or PC copy) If you want to buy games digitally in japanese youll also need to make a japanese nentendo acount but thats generally no less painful than trying to buy japanese games from japanese websites online also XD.

My advice would be, look at the catalog of games available in comparison to what you want to play and see what works for your situation. I play all game types so having a switch console is deffinetly worth it whereas if I only played one genre of game I would probably think about the decision more! If I had no pc than a switch is cheaper than a pc so i would get a swtch but if i had a pc which had acess to the games I wanted I would think "why would I need the switch unless I preffer to play handheld".

Do you think it's worth buying a Switch console for otome games?

Personally, I would say no unless it's modded. Even past that, it depends on what you like to play.

I prefer Switch emulators on PC because otome titles aren't too demanding system wise. You also have a bigger screen, can stream to others easily, and it's very simple to use translation programs with them as well.

The money saved this way (and on games) could go farther in one of the co-buy groups to get otome games for everyone and yourself on an emulator.

i honestly bought my switch for this reason! for some time i was depending on my ps vita for playing console games on otome (that didn't last too long unfortunately), before i knew of emulators being a possibility. to me, it is worth it. i got lucky and ended up liking the majority of the games i bought and it's nice to support the publishers.

I just have a friend who bought a switch console and goes to work happy. I liked the idea. I've also heard that games are more expensive. I hadn't thought about censorship, but it's still a downside

They say that you can't access the internet in a modified version, and there's a risk of being blocked. Do you think this is true?

If it's solely for otome games and you think you won't be playing other games, you could consider getting a Switch Lite instead (you can't project the game to a TV or another larger screen that way but it's more affordable than the normal Switch or more expensive versions)

I'd recommend doing some research on the prices of physical vs digital versions of otome games in your country and currency and seeing how affordable it is for your budget.

DekuDeals is a great site for keeping track of how often games go on sale and how high the discounts so you can predict when sales are likely or whether it's actually a good deal or the price will go lower.

I already have a ps4, and I love it. I play shooters and AAA games on my ps4. I'd like to have something portable that I can carry with me and use during breaks at work and on trips.

There is but it is very very difficult to get blocked on the switch based on how they are set up.

Prices for games depends on developer, some are much cheaper than others. Anywhere from around 30 USD to 40 USD is normal for a Otome game at release. But there are frequent sales.

When making your choice, I think you should also consider the environment where you want to play.

For example, if you prefer sitting at a desk indoors to play, a desktop PC running an emulator is ideal.

If you prefer to relax by sinking into a comfortable sofa or dozing off in bed, a portable gaming device is more suitable.

However, purchasing a console or buying software directly supports creators directly, boosting their motivation and ensuring the continuation of their projects.
Therefore, the purchase itself is the best and most legitimate form of support, and I believe your choice is excellent.

Ahh if you're wanting to play AAA games on it then Switch Lite probably won't cut it (can't really hook it up to hotel TVs and such)

Are you interested in a lot of Switch exclusive games (otome or not)? Steam Deck is another portable option if you're okay with missing out on those ones

I haven't heard about the Steam Deck. But there are many exclusive games on the Switch, including Otome. I don't play through an emulator on my PC

There are versions of emulators that allow for it, and some allow local connection only. If you're wanting to play online and multiplayer games, I would go with a regular console or maybe a Steam Deck. Emulators work on Steam Decks from what I've seen, but I know less about that process.

Budget and currency as someone else stated, is another factor to consider. Supporting fully is nice if possible, but games can be expensive if you're wanting a lot and depending on location. If you know you'll be careful about going online, my recommendation is an emulator on a laptop for the portability and co-buying for the otome titles you like. If you want that portability, Switch games and something for higher end games, a Steam Deck would be the way to go in my opinion.

Edit: Opinions appear to differ a bit, and that's okay. Each person's situation is different and should be respected. This is why I said support fully if you can, co-buy if you can support a little, otherwise no judgement from me because I've been there as well and so have others. Outside of Japan, it can be very expensive to buy certain things from these companies.

Emulation is legal and the newer ones are updated with fixes relatively quickly. I wouldn't worry about that.

Do what works best for you, your needs and budget. Not having enough shouldn't bar anyone from what they enjoy.

I'll read about the Steam Deck

If we support the games by purchasing them, the companies make more. So its always good to buy the games you like the most on console.
Agreeing on that, I know games are expensive but some have huge sales from time to time (like that time bustafelows eng got -90%, and the game is absolutey NOT worth 4 bucks, it's worth much more)

A pirate community is usually against paying but we have to keep in mind that it's a niche genre so we have to give them financial support to keep it alive and not cry when most game companies don't release anything anymore like it was the case a couple years ago with only otomate being alive.

And the more people buy the more there will be people who can upload if the game is deleted from platforms (like it's the case for many doujin otome games unfortunately)

Anyway yeah if you can afford it get yourself a switch, it's best when modded but even without that it's pretty convenient to play in a cozy environment. And there really are a lot of sales, most common is -50% imo but sometimes there are better deals (like fucking bustafellows at 4 bucks lol that was crazy)

For steamdeck it's a good deal but you have to keep in mind not all games work perfectly on emulators so it might get frustrating if the game you want to play isn't playable.

I personally buy everything I really want, usually quite expensive collectors editions too. I also support the company in other ways, such as Merch ordering and engaging with content.
If you cannot afford the games, I recommend always buying OFFICAL MERCH of the content you want to support. That also helps fund new projects.

From your other replys indicating that you play other game genres and that your after specifically something handheld it definetly sounds like a switch could be up your alley. Basiclly every console release of visual novels comes with the downside of censorship unfortunately, even steam games often require patches to return content to them so if you have any NSFW titles your after I would probably recomend geting them directly from the publisher websites if you chose to purchace them. Otherwise the switch has a good catalog overall with a good mix of games available both digitaly and physically in Japanese and English. I tend to prefer to buy physical copies due to console space and also just to own them and support the production and translation of new games but most visual novels are quite efficient with their space so even if you get an original switch or a switch lite you would probably be able to fit a fair few titles on there.

I personally don't play any download beyond 10% and then decide to buy it or not.

My otome game shelf is overflowing. When I do buy games I purchase the limited edition or the sweet boxes / hime boxes. I visit all the pop up cafes and merch pop ups etc

I love physical copies a lot but have started to back up a lot of games so I can have the freedom of playing on my PC.

I also have. A modded switch so I can put my PC saves on my switch and continue from bed if I want to.

There are lots of otome games you could play with switch, so I'll buy it if I was you. Actually I've been playing only one game for switch for two years since I bought it, but I never regretted it
