Birth Years: Which Do You Prefer?

I've actually seen someone who had the same thought as you about Satoru Gojo turn it into a manga.

This is just a guess on my part, but by any chance, are you into "yume" (self-insert) fandom? I got that impression from the way you talked about your feelings for Athrun Zala and Satoru Gojo.
If you're not familiar with it, no pressure at all, but you might enjoy looking up some yume works sometime!

For context, "yume" is a fan-created genre where a person imagines themselves, or a self-insert character, having a romantic relationship with a character from a manga, anime, or other fictional work.

I like both, actually. I feel like both approaches have their own charm.

For characters with clearly established birth years, we get a sense of which generation they belong to, what they experienced during different periods of their lives, and what kind of mindset or worldview they might have as a result. But for this to work well, the writer really needs to be good at it, and the series needs to have a well-established lore, too. I think of series like Tsukiuta, or SolidS, which is one of the groups I like. The characters actually get older every year, so it feels like they're growing up alongside us.

On the other hand, characters without established birth years, which is the case for most characters, have their own advantage: they never really change. Whatever they were like on day one, they can still be exactly the same today, as long as the franchise itself is still alive. The depth and complexity of their characterization can simply come from other aspects instead of their age.
