The romance in RPG games eg: Baldurs Gate 3, dragon origins

I don't necessarily think that I would qualify the romance in Baldur's Gate - or any of the other franchise/games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Fallout, Cyberpunk 2077, etc - as specifically just for women (although the direction is definitely more inclusive, and women are a part of that).

I think the industry is (SLOWLY) coming to an awareness that there are gamers who are male, female, and/or somewhere on the spectrum between - and that offering more understanding and freedom in regards to the gender you can play as and the characters you can romance is something that is going to attract a broader following and potentially generate more sales.

Ooooh, this is totally my topic.

First of all, Mass Effect is my favorite game series of all time. I genuinely couldn't tell you how many Garrus/Shepard fanfics I've read. Huge respect to BioWare — I watched a video on YouTube about how they eventually decided to start making romances for a female audience as well, and it was really interesting. I really miss their old-school RPGs.
Another great example is Persona 3 Portable. The female protagonist was such an amazing addition, and it's a shame we haven't gotten a female version of the protagonist in the games that followed.
As for Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin2 — I'm really looking forward to Larian's next game. I'm pretty confident they'll keep the romance, companion interactions, and dialogue-heavy parts of the game.

I really enjoy RPGs and play them quite a lot, but I don't usually care much for the romance options. I mainly play them for the action, gameplay, and overall story.

I second Persona 3 Portable and FMC is so cute too! for Reload there's a FMC mod being actively made and I hope to be able to play reload again with full FMC route working!

I LOVE games like this!! My fave games and LIs are:
  • Baldur's Gate 3 (Astarion & Halsin)
  • Dragon Age Origins (Alistair)
  • Fire Emblem Awakening (Chrom & Lon'qu)
  • Fire Emblem Fates (Jakob)
  • Fire Emblem Three Houses (Dimitri)
  • Rune Factory 4 (Vishnal)
  • Persona 3 Portable (Shinjiro)
  • Harvest Moon DS Cute (Skye)
  • Stardew Valley (Sebastian)

Yes, I love this kind of game too!

My old favorite is Alistair (Dragon Age: Origins)
My newer favorites are Halsin (BG3) and Daeran (Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous)

Looking forward to Larian's new Divinity game and Owlcat's The Expanse: Osiris Reborn.

We've come a long way from Anomen (BG2). The future is looking up. :)

I wouldn't say recent changes, as the first Dragon Age is from 2009, and it has one of the very good romance stories. And there are probably earlier games with good woman-oriented romance.

A bit of unpopular opinion, but in recent games everyone can date any character, regardless of their sex, and it kind of makes everything bland. Ofc there are and can be bi-characters (Daeran, Zevran, Leliana etc. exist). But I think story should be different when MC is male or female, so making everything the same diminishes fun a little bit. Where is struggling, and gay awaikenings, and discoveries you cannot date a character because you are not what they prefer (Dorian >_<)

Waiting for Osiris Reborn and Dark Heresy, as I'm an Owlcat believer 🙏

I've always been a huge fan or RPGs, and companions/party dynamic in general. Romances are always a nice bonus.
I think we've made some huge progress in games, even as a certain crowd still bitches every time a game with a fem PC is announced.
I find some romances in RPGs even more compelling than most otomes, and I tend to get attached to that characters even more, to be honest. I think it's because RPGs are much longer games, and I pour a lot of hours in them, plus RPGs give you the chance to see the characters in a lot of ways: how they react to certain choices and the world around them, the relationships with the other companions, their relationship with the main character not only as a possible partner, but also as a comrade and a friend. I think they tend to give you a more well-rounded view of the character as a person.

I very much agree with this - I don't think I've seen any RPGs games targeted specifically at women, but since the 2000s studios have started to see that women are a part of the player base, and so they've started making choices that could appeal to them as well, but still as a part of the larger audience, not as the primary target like otome does. Even if you have a set fem PC, women are only a *part* of the audience not *the* audience (and there's a certain crowd that will never stop bitching about those games, even though the majority of games with a set PC have a male one). Though that's mostly referring to mainstream studios and specifically to the genre of RPGs and Action games. There's some indie games like, let's say, Cabernet that are more aimed at women.

Returning to romance, though... I'd say my favorites are Daeran from WOTR (as a character, he's both really funny and witty, but also really sweet and tragic, in some ways. It was interesting to see him with the rest of the party, too, both in his interactions with Ember and Lann and as a foil to Camilla. I just think he was really a well-written character) and Shadowheart from BG3 (It was just a really sweet story, with slowly building trust and coming to terms with her origins and stepping away from Shar. Also the beach scene was really beautiful and romantic, especially with her going from the fear of water being one of the first vulnerable revelations she makes to swimming together).
I've also really liked Zevran, Fenris and Sera from Dragon Ages and Garrus from Mass Effect, as well Judy in Cyberpunk (though in this one, I think the relationship I loved the most was Fem V's friendship with Panam, far more than the two romances available).
Lastly, while Skyrim does not have a deep romance system, I think Farkas deserves and honorable mention for being both my very first rpg 'romance', and for being a very faithful househusband and tending to my hoard of orphans and stolen books in many playthroughs.
Sorry for the long yap, lol.

Lol I started DA:O thinking I'd romance Alistair but I liked Morrigan so much I had to restart as a male character. :( Enjoyed romancing Anders in Da2 though it added to the experience for sure lololol. I went for Dorian in DAI and he's still one of my fav characters, even though I never finished DAI. I guess my type is Mages That Leave Me..
I actually agree that it's good that the characters have preferences but I wanted to have a yuriful romance with Morrigan soooo baaad but it was kinda fun to roleplay as my pathetic male mage. And with Dorian, in the end, I totally spent too much time on ao3 reading abt him and the iron bull lol...
Also sorryyyy not RPGs but farmsims like Fields of Mistria and Stardew Valley having romance is one of the main pulls i think. I love seeing who ppl romance in different games and comparing the charas lol... Trying to romance Hayden in FoM myself. My second fav is Juniper (no surprises)

Dragon Age the series is my all time favourite franchise, just sad the most recent wasn't great, it was good just didn't feel like what Dragon Age has made itself look like.
Love BG3 I became OBSESSED with that game that when I was WFH I was just playing BG3 XD.

I think it's good people are understanding the female gaze and not only women, but LGBTQ+, Dragon Age Inquisition was a great game for that it didn't been to the normal rules.

Sadly and weirdly it feels like we are starting to regress slightly. I don't know if it's because the Echo Chamber is getting louder, but I just see less game developer being creative

Romance in Dragon Age: Origins was really fun. It was quite a long time ago, but even in the old Baldur's Gate games, installing mods allowed for attractive romances with male characters like Edwin and Solaufein.

I love RPG's where you can be a female MC and romance story characters. I played Bioware RPG's before I got into otome. I'm still impressed Dragon Age Inquisition was one of the rare games where playing as a female elf had more romance options than male MC options. Also loved BG3 and I have a few more CRPG's backlogged.

I love it. Even if you play as a man, like in the Persona series, I don't really mind as long as it has romance, lol. Well, sometimes I prefer the male character routes, which are non-existent ofc (for example, Yosuke in P4 and Akechi in P5). Their chemistry and dynamic with the protagonist just feel right.

One game that didn't have a romance route but still quite romantic is NieR:Automata. That game hurts but lovely at the same time, lol.

I looooove romance in rpg games and it's one of the sell points for me. I'm a Astarion/Halsin/Karlach lover btw, although Astarion is always my choice at the start of the game but I can't deny the one time I dated Karlach was branded within my heart.

I wish most of the games added romance tbf, it's quite a niche opinion specially because warframe is a game I started liking more after they added romance, I'm a visual novel lover through and through so having the romance option makes it all so much interesting, although I don't think it's targeted only for the female gaze, at the beginning maybe but nowadays the big companies are realizing there are other type of players (non female) that like the romance. Dragon Age veilguard was one of them, although not my favorite from the whole franchise they did go beyond by adding even a non binary/trans dateable option which I think is really sweet to the community.

I can't wait to play blood of the dawnwalker because I heard there is romance, unfortunately can't run it on the deck

Omg yesss!! Mass Effect is my favourite game franchise ever. The variety of characters was a huge plus, and seeing the consequences of my actions unfold throughout the story was such an interesting experience. It was probably what led me straight to visual novels soon after, looking for a similar feeling. For me, Garrus is the ultimate LI in the game. His voice is just so smooth and addictive. He made me forget what Shepard had with Kaidan in the first game really quickly....

Baldur's Gate was a pleasant surprise. I've never been a huge fan of turn-based (electronic) games, so I wasn't giving it much thought. But, being D&D-curious and an RPG enthusiast, my boyfriend convinced me to give it a try (same thing happened with Expedition 33, btw), and I loved ittt. Had a whole relationship with Wyll, then Minthara in a second, more evil run... Also guilty of romancing the Emperor.

I tried playing Divinity, but it didn't really hook me yet... Definitely looking forward to whatever Larian comes up with next.

I do love romances in RPGs. Though, are you referring to CRPGs which also happen to have customizable players with multiple romances options or is this leaving out JRPGs? I'm also not sure what you mean by BG3 having "romance intended for women" as all the character's romances can be played by anyone.

Other than that, I do see what you mean as CRPGs have been lacking romance options for female player characters for a while now and only started to better this with the Pillars of Eternity series, DOS II, PWOTR, Rogue Trader and BG3. I did like the originally trajectory of the characters in the demo a lot better before player feedback whittled them down as characters. As well as many routes besides Astarion's not getting enough content. But what was I expecting? Larian wasn't know for their good writing until DOS II and even then it had some fumbles as well as the bugs and missing questlines they're known for.

My favorite romances are Valen (DLC for NWN), Aloth (POE series), bits and pieces of the BG3 romances, all romances from Rogue Trader and almost all of the romances from PWOTR. I'm probably missing a few but those are all I can think of at the moment.

Edit: Ifan from DOS II!!!! I loved his route. Lohse and Sebille's routes were also good. Fane's is alright/good if you find restoration mods for his one ending.
