I'm planning to overclock my processor, but I cannot do it with a shitty stock cooler.
I'm thinking of buying a water cooler but is the performance difference really worth the price? Also which thermal paste is good?

Depending on how old and the speed of your CPU, Buying a new one be more cost effective then getting a cooler and overclocking it to get increases preformance.
Can you please supply more details about your cpu etc.

Here is some information that might help you.

This is a good cooler
Corsair hydro Series H60 CPU Coolers

Thermal Compound:
Arctic Cooling MX-2 High Performance Thermal Compound

my CPU is an i5 3470 (socket: lga1155). is there a cheaper alternative such as an air cooler? i don't really want to spend more than $45.

MMM when i get to school i will talk to a few of the other guys about cheaper options.
I was going to suggest a fan i use but it costs alot more then the liquid cooling :(

After some discussion your cpu can only be overclocked a little. Making it somewhat that there is no point to overclocking it. Now if you do overclock it a little the fan that come with your chip should be sufficient enough to cool it. Just make sure to clean the heat sink out.

For overclocking in the future make sure to buy the K chips as they can be overclocked alot more.

If you decide to still try here is a video about it:

Yeah. You have a non-unlocked version of the chip, so there is not much available for overclocking. If I'm not mistaken, the only thing you can alter is the main base clock multiplier, which can quickly cause other timing problems.

If you want a good air cooler, go for a Hyper Evo 212. The thermal paste that comes with it should be good enough, but if you are the type of person that worries over 1 or 2 degrees, you could go for more expensive stuff.

If you ever plan to overclock, look for the K version of the chip. That is how Intel marks their unlocked versions, which have more options for overclocking.

Happy computing. :)

Usually you don't have to think about the thermal paste, since the difference is not going to be big.
I had some difficulties applying the mx-2. So i'd recommend the Artic Silver 5 for easy handling.

Since you don't have the K-version, i think, mostly any tower-cooler will do the trick. Shouldn't cost you more than 40 bugs.
I think, the brand "Alpenfoehn" (Link) seems to be quiet good.#

With 45$ you won't get any useful watercooling.

decided to go with an alternative to that cooler master air cooler

ty for helping me decide.
