I'm currently playing Shinoda Shinjuku Tantei Jimusho ~Karajishi Botan, and it's not too bad. I appreciate the very adult (not in a sexual way) characters, and the very lived in world. The fact that the story feels like it could be an episode of a tv series makes it very interesting. It's not very dramatic, and I personally love a dramatic flair or a world changing mystery, so it does feel slow sometimes. But for what it is, and the story it's trying to tell I think it's quite good. It's BL FYI.

About halfway through Bara no Ki ni Bara no Hanasaku. As expected from the writer behind Shingakkou, it's a little... crazy at times but that's exactly what I'm there for.

So unfortunately my progress slowed down a lot because I'm busy IRL and I haven't seen it all yet either. For now, I can say that my favorite is Mitsunobu, he does eventually get nicer to Kaname and they have great chemistry then. Give him a chance, maybe even if you hate him. As far as side pairings go, I generally like anything involving Hougetsu (although he's perfectly fine as a main LI as well, especially if you want to learn some lore). His novels really work wonders when it comes to connecting him to the other characters, and he's probably the most wholesome out of all of them, maybe besides Kaname himself, provided you play nice. And finally, my honorable mention goes to Mayumi. Admittedly, I didn't like him as a main love interest that much, but as a side one... Let me just say that him x Mitsunobu was a wild ride, you'll either love it or hate it (but since you're already playing this game, it's probably the former).

Thank you for your thoughts! For the main story, I currently only read the good/pure route for Kaname/Norizane. I appreciated it didn't have controversial elements but it was a bit predictable. So about controversial elements... If you mean non-con/dub-con, it's practically half of the game. Of course you can just only play the "pure love" routes, but I thought it would be nice to let you know if that's not your cup of tea.

I realized but it's okay, it's a 20+ year-old story after all, I don't expect the same sensibility we have nowadays (also it has a lot of horror elements so! In that context it makes a lot of sense). Anyway, thank you!

Apologies if I'm unnecessarily intruding on the conversation, but as I've been replaying the game as well I'd also personally highly recommend reading the Mitsunobu&Norizane storyline too. Since aside from being a personal top favorite, it adds extra context to some of the formers behavior and why he made certain choices

So it's kinda among the parts where you can gain extra 'lore' on the full relationship spaghetti that the cast was in at the start of the game (that unlike the other cases, isn't as explictly pointed out unless you put the two together in either of the scenarios)

Glad I spoke up then too, since while it's not something supercrucial or anything...the best way I could probably put it otherwise is - if we were to speak about who's the character Mitsunobu has a special 'connection' similar to Norizane's attachment towards Kaname, Azusa worshipping Mitsunobu etc the answer that's more subtler but still constantly present is Norizane (which the nonpure route scenes of the two get almost hilariously blunt about)

So it's worthwhile to read when it comes to fully learning Mitsunobu's character and why the two tend to be paired up in submaterial iirc (with the other pairing beside them mainly being Tsukimura+Hougetsu&Kaname)

Nw, I don't have any IRL friend whom I can talk to about this, so I'm always happy to find internet fans to chat with <3

Ideally I'd like to 100% complete this VN but I'm not very confident I can manage to, with work and other stuff keeping me busy and also my attention span not being in the best shape to follow super long stories. So I gladly accept any advice on which routes I should prioritize.
