Wondering why there are many otome games don't have a PC version

Just curious, I have played many kinds of visual novels (otome, gal game, BL, and GL) and I found that when compared with the others, there are a lot of games that don't have a PC version.

My guess:
- Probably because otome's gameplay for the majority is a visual novel. And people tend to prefer to play those kinds of games on a console that is easy to carry anywhere, because they can play while lying down on the bed, or they can play while traveling. Unlike PC games, where you have to stay in the same place, it can get boring if you just read while you have to stay in the same place for a long time. Remember, otome games targeted primarily at women. Young girl also love to play otome games and they usually prefer to play on console like DS (back then in DS era), after DS -> PSP - > PSP Vita -> And now Switch...
- Maybe the devs see more potential and revenue if they released the game on console rather than PC.
- PC games also have a high risk of being easily pirated and shared illegally, while for the console, the one who mostly download the pirated version is non-console user because for console users to play pirated games, their device must have been cracked first, I think? I'm not really sure since I never own console and only heard this tiny bit of info.

Again, all of this is just my speculation haha

previous commenters pretty much said it perfectly, but i also heard that in japan, gaming is slowly switching from pc to phones and consoles. pc gaming wasnt that huge in the first place, but its becoming even less relevant lately. and it kinda makes sense, considering the work culture in japan? you cant take a whole pc to work, but a handheld console or a phone is an easy choice

also, console releases are always sfw, because the platform requires them to be. on the contrary, most galge and bl titles are 18+, which is why they release on pcs. this is kinda related to the ongoing discussion of the visual novel "genre" as a whole slowly dying, because there are less and less 18+ (galge) releases. on the other hand, otome are still releasing pretty steadily! and i guess since they are already sfw, theres no real need to have pc ports, unless its a reeeeeally huge title. or an indie title

thats what i think at least. feel free to correct me!!!!!!

I think it's more about comfort, perhaps? I'm someone who reads a lot; I even have a Kindle to read in my free time. I like the comfort of playing anywhere. I don't think it should be very different for the Japanese consumer. Although I prefer PC ports, which are much simpler to patch into English than consoles, every side has its advantages.

I think it's because handheld consoles have a larger market share. The Switch is cheaper than a PC, and you can play text-based games sitting or lying down, plus you can easily pull it out while traveling, which is less convenient with a PC.

ohhh yeah, i've noticed that too 😅 i think it's mostly because otome games are super popular on consoles and mobile, so devs focus on where most people are playing. making a pc version takes extra work for UI and controls, so smaller studios sometimes just skip it. kinda makes sense but i wish more of them came to pc tho!

Like someone said, they are a lot more mainstream and get sent to consoles where the physical midia is a little bit more expensive. What's funny is that they don't even care to port to pc, so you're stuck with console or emulation.

from my understanding as an outsider: otome games in asia (china and japan specifically) are much more popular on portable consoles & mobile phones because you can play them on the go. this is why we have so many gacha otome games - same sort of principle. *⸜( •ᴗ• )⸝* you can play them on your phone on your way to work instead of having to sit down at home for hours.

Bing bing bing, thats why mostly otome went to PS2, PSP, PSV, and mostly with sony because they made portable "HD" versions there exist nintendo version of the most popular games but with terrible resolution "see NDS, 3DS ports" but fewwwss, now with switch and phones you can see the market go in that way because their sales amount talking about consoles and know is more easy use the phone for that...

Mabye the reason is what platform producers chose, lots of doujin make PC version too.

Perhaps it's both because playing on handheld consoles is more practical for those who play visual novels, and also because of accessibility? Not everyone has a PC, and I think handheld consoles are cheaper than a PC, at least where I live PCs are quite expensive compared to a handheld console like a Switch, PSP, PSV, and DS.
