Which title would you recommend to newcomers, and why?

Graphics, plot, character stuffs, anime/manga adoptions etc... there's a lot to consider about!
Picking just one strong pick is harder than I thought sometimes, so I'd love to hear what everyone thinks. :D
For myself, I usually recommend Nil Admirari no Tenbin. It's easy to get into, and a really fun read, plus gorgeous character designs by Satoi-sensei!!

I personally think it depends in their preferences but Lover Pretend might be a good start if they dont want anything heavy or complicated or a 50 hour long common route (looking at you olympia...)

Other than that, its an unspoken rite of passage for every otome gamer to play Amnesia:Memories and experience The Cage™

games that are on a lot of platforms, get a sale often(compared to other games), not pricy. like amnesia, piofiore, ozmafia etc. are pretty good for the general public

recommending hatoful boyfriend to people who enjoyed the doki doki, totono era of the internet because for some reason birds are more acclimatable for people( i unfortunately am not a birdlover so i haven't played :(

i thought jack jeanne was a beloved high-selling game on steam too but now that i look its not even on steam. did i make that up in my head?? if they have a switch (or if JJ really is on the steam after all) i would personally recommend jack jeanne because... idk i think its a good game a lot can enjoy, not exactly what people think otome is

edit: Villainess Is Adored by the Prince of the Neighbor Kingdom would be a good recommendation for villainess manhwa lovers

Depends on how acquainted they are with visual novels in general, but probably Amnesia (I see it being mentioned a lot here, dunno what they put in it but it does feel like the most obvious choice). If I were to stray from that then I'd say Nameless, or even Cinderella Phenomenon; those are decent in my opinion

although if they have a switch there's more wiggle room in that regard..

Seconding Amnesia, Collar x Mallice, and Hakuoki! They're classics of the otome genre and beloved for a reason, and they don't have any hard minigames and they have straightforward systems (ex. Amnesia where you can pick which LI's world you want to go to) They're also very popular in the community, so if they ever want merch or people to talk to, it'd be way easier to find them ( ˘▽˘)っ

For pc otomes, I would suggest Cinderella Phenomenon or Steam Prison! They're shorter than other otomes but long enough to still be enjoyable. Interesting story, unique routes, and lovely LIs, they're a nice gateway to otome games in general^^

Oh man, I don't mean to yuck anybody's yum, but why is Amnesia so recommended? If that was my first otome, I'm not sure I would have played another... (My main complaint being the heroine is such a doormat, and when the LIs like how submissive she is, I just **side-eye judging the LI**)

My recommendation for a first game would be a free one. If they don't like it, they won't feel as bad about it. Something like Our Life: Beginnings & Always or Cinderella Phenomenon.

for the same reason why saya no uta is recommended to those wanting to get into eroge! as in, an okayish length for a newcomer, availability (pc port), common tropes for the genre (for otome its tsundere, kuudere, childhood friend, yandere, The Cage and other le problematic stuff), mc who doesnt set the standard too high, stuff like that
also, isnt your pfp dialovers? doesnt that mean you successfully passed the beginner's trial? ww

Literally laughed at this.

I can see the okayish length, availability, and tropes as pluses, but I feel like that applies to lot of games?

Yeah yeah, I passed the beginner's trial. Pfp is dialovers which I played before Amnesia. Amnesia was not my first otome, it was like.. 10th? And I played part of it and was just not Not NOT into it. The difference to me is Yui has more personality? Like sometimes she's like "NO THANK YOU" and it happens anyway, but from what I played of Amnesia the MC was just like "Oh, ok, if you say so" to everything. Yeah, she has amnesia, but there are tons of cdrama heroines who are way more assertive and also have amnesia. Also I was into dialovers but I mean... I would not recommend it as a first game to a beginner lol

And the people who recommend Saya no Uta I assume are trying to troll the newbies with freaky stuff lol

not at all! saya no uta perfectly encapsulates what are you going to encounter in like, 70% of eroge. especially if you arent planning to restrict yourself to only yuzusoft works w
Literally laughed at this.
i mean, otome is a genre for weirdos who love selfinserting, so of course most otome mcs are not gonna be some awesome girlbosses.. unless we are talking about r18 otome, which for some reason are being sold to men and therefore are allowing themselves to have mcs with strong personalities^^

also, when talking about cdrama, are you talking about dramacd or chinese drama? if its the latter, then the comparison is unfair, since otome come from japan and therefore conform to japanese standards and demands. if its the former, then its still an unfair comparison because in most dramacd, the mc is silent for obvious reason, so its kinda hard to establish her personality as anything in the first place!

and its not like meek mcs are universally hated. amnesia's heroine is very much liked in japanese circles for example! and if anything, ive seen the opinions from same japanese circles about not wanting to have too strong or independent heroines, so.. the point about standards still stands i guess..!

Frankly, I find it kind of insulting that "self-insert" = meek, are you trying to say we aren't all girl bosses irl?? Like how dare you?? <<joking :)>>

By cdrama I mean Chinese drama. "Female MC is pursued by multiple male LIs" is a very popular genre, and amnesia is a common trope, so I compare the two. The word otome comes from Japan but in 2026 there are many "girl romances boys" games from around the world that are still called otome both on forums and in their official advertising. Maybe even more English games than Japanese games? I don't know the exact numbers, but there are others from China, Korea, Russia, etc. So I judge all media by the same metric - basically, is it fun for me?

And yes, I have seen many Japanese commenters dissing the strong heroines. But it's not all Japanese players, there are Japanese who hate submissive heroine too! :) Anyway, my point wasn't that nobody can enjoy Amnesia the game, just that I'm glad it wasn't recommended to me when I started playing otome games. :)

And probably the best recommendation for new players would be a list with variety so they can find something to fit their own tastes.

oof yea then its a tough comparison.. coming back to selfinserts, chinese girlies do indeed insist that the presense of the female mc in games is kept to the minimum! there even was drama not long ago with lovebrush chronicles, where girlies got mad at one of the devs trying to give the mc a distinct design and bigger presence in the story. and dont forget how they reacted to lads' home feature (although it came with its own set of issues, like mc's sexualization). cultural differences and all that!

also, otome games do indeed come from many countries, but japan is still the one that follows the original definition the closest. the definition being a romance between a female mc and male lis. other countries, especially english-speaking ones, seem to want to rewrite the definition to include male/nonbinary mcs, yuri routes, even inclusion of bl! all of which directly go against the genre. so if someone is genuinely interested in the genre as a whole, i personally would assume that recommending them non-japanese games would be a bad move..;; especially if theyre not otome at all! like our life or other amare titles. we dont need even more fighting in this community..

naturally! still though, amnesia is a good choice precisely because it contains a good chunk of common otome tropes. so if a newcomer finds herself being unable to continue, thats fine! just means the genre is not for her, and thats more than okay:D

I am not worthy of 乙女-badge as I haven't played most of the games people speak here XD My pick is Ayakashi Gohan because I have successfully turned into otaku one of my friends who never read a vn in their life. It's relatively short, has modern-time setting so Japanese is extremely easy to read (and there is a patch if you don't know it), and levels of craziness are mild

Ooh, that's a really good question! Honestly? If the person in question is looking to transition from more mainstream gaming into otome, I'd go for any of the TMGS games as a recommendation? At least that's how a lot of friends got into the genre! If we're going for something I think anyone could get hooked by right off the bat, then I'll have to agree with Collar X Malice!

I'll always recommend the tokimeki series. It's like starting with your roots of a classic.
I agree with trying one of the free games on itch to see if it's actually your type of gaming system.
(.❛ ᴗ ❛.)

If not, I would choose an RPG like fire emblem or Story of Seasons, Rune Factory or even Stardew Valley. Romance is a major plot line in each of the games but it's not the sole purpose of the game, so if they enjoy the chatting and the mechanics that come along with courting your LI, I'd then would figure out what style they would enjoy.

If they're wanting lightheartedness like Lover Pretend, Darker titles such as Ebon Light or if they're wanting to play something a little silly like Cupid Parasite, then expand from there.

let otome spread across the world~ヽ(✿゚▽゚)ノ
