Its been bugging me for quite some time.

When reading a visual novel, you can use a tool called text hooker to capture the game's text for a translation program to translate it for you.
But that doesn't always work properly. If the text hooker doesn't understand the game engine, it'll only give you gibberish. In that case, you'll need a hook code. A hook code is a code that you put in the text hooker, to help the text hooker capture the text properly.

Thanks! that explains it. btw just for references how accurate are those translation program? (considering japanese can be gruesome)

Really bad I'd say. Kinda fine if you can guess the meaning from the context but there are still a lot of limitations.

But text hookers can help with human translation too. You can c/p text to a dictionary word by word, instead of letting the machine translate the whole sentence.

to be honest i dont understand how one can stand to do such effort just to play a visual novel. i mean japanese are hard and it took me 2 years just to be able to read simple visual novel smoothly but i guess not everyone have time nor energy to spare for such heavy investment on japanese
